Is a secure field walk safe for my dog in 30 degree heat?

I don’t want to end up on Facebook but I’ve booked a secure field for my dog this week when the temperature will be over 30 degrees. Is it just pavements that are the issue or is a gentle stroll off lead in this field a risk also?

How would you feel out walking in this heat?

GreenFootstool · 21/06/2026 22:56

Is there shade? Water? What time of day?

I take mine to secure fields but later in the evening when the sun is lower in the sky, temp reducing, shade is longer and absolutely no balls or toy throwing.

PressureImplosion · 21/06/2026 22:56

It's not safe. The heat/the sun/ over exertion/dehydration/sunstroke.

At 30 degrees keep your dog indoors and do some scent games for stimulation.

And if you must do a walk do it late in the evening.

Definitely a risk! Your dog won't die from not having a walk but could potentially from being walked in the heat.

Please don't risk it.

Zov · 21/06/2026 22:56

Do you have to walk on any pavements or concrete to get to said field?

What time of day are you taking them?

How long will they be out?

Do you have water for them (and a bowl to put it in?)

A dog won't die from not being walked for 3-4 days you know...

.

Gottensomedraws · 21/06/2026 22:58

No dog needs to be walked in these temps, wait until late evening to see if it cools enough, or keep them home until later in the week.

Boxingshibes · 21/06/2026 23:01

It'll be fine if you're there before 8am or after 9pm. The rest of the time probably not. Unless it is vvv shady.
Atm my dogs are walked about 6am and 8/9pm.
The test is always put your bare foot on tge ground for 30s/1m if it's too hot for you dont do it.
Please reconsider.

Thanks everyone.

To answer some questions it’s at 4pm, half the field is shaded and there’s a water station. Will give it a miss though.

Ooooh, no, not 4pm, that is one of the hottest parts of the day!

Pamelaaaaaar · 21/06/2026 23:06

lol did you post this purely to get a rise out of the people who are obsessed with dogs being out in the sun? I feel like you did.

FairViewRosie25 · 21/06/2026 23:09

Far too hot. My two came back from kennels at 8 this morning went for a run then have collapsed on the sofas waking up for ice cubes every couple of hours

Lougle · 21/06/2026 23:13

I'm glad you're giving it a miss. This chart from Petplan is really helpful because the risk changes according to breed, age and size.

Sonolanona · 21/06/2026 23:17

No.
4pm..nearly the hottest time of the day! Even in the shade 30 degrees isnàt going to be remotely comfortable. And yes I know dogs manage in hotter climates... because they, like people, are acclimatised. We are not. Neither are our pets. Dogs can't take their coats off and don't sweat... not much fun!
My dog HATES to miss a walk and won't poo in the garden either...but we will be going out at 6am and 10pm and that's it.
The secure dog fields near me have all closed for next week...ditto dog walkers, because it's the responsible thing to do.

OkImListening · 21/06/2026 23:24

No, absolutely not.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 21/06/2026 23:31

No. Get up early to walk and/or very late. Depending upon breed and age.

BruFord · 22/06/2026 00:11

I live in a place that has hot summers and we always take our dog out early morning and late evening (after 9 pm). Dogs really suffer in that heat; I'd keep him indoors until later

How would you feel out walking in this heat?

With a fur coat on? Hmmm?

Ketley67 · 22/06/2026 13:10

I’ve switched the time to 6am

OP posts:
GreenFootstool · 22/06/2026 13:52

Good idea. I was out at 6am today and will be out earlier for the next few days as well!

mindutopia · 22/06/2026 14:00

I think it’s fine if it’s short. It’s not like we can keep them inside all day without weeing. But is it worth the money? I’ve just taken mine outside for about 10 minutes and we’ve walked the circumference of our 2 acre field. She has to wee at some point. But would I pay for 5/10 minutes to walk around a field in the heat? Probably not. Just go somewhere close to home and shady and free.
