Flowers for Father's Day

Apparently the guy who runs the Parenting Out Loud website (which I'd never heard of until today tbf) is starting a campaign to buy flowers as a father's day gift: https://www.lbc.co.uk/article/giving-my-dad-flowers-fathers-day-gift-opinion-5Hjdbqq_2/

Now, DD(4) actually did get DH flowers for FD this year - along with chocolate - she was adamant that's what she wanted to get him. And he was, of course, appreciative (although somewhat surprised 😆).

But what do others think? Good idea?

I'm giving my dad flowers this Father's Day. You should do it too | LBC

It’s neither a good or a bad idea.

They’re just flowers 🤷‍♀️

Love them or hate them but no-one needs them.

BravasPatatas · 21/06/2026 19:38

Surely it depends on whether your father likes flowers?

A lovely hanging basket appeared as if by magic on the hook outside our house today for DH from DD.
He's delighted!

Mine preferred crisps and my mum preferred chocolates or bubble bath.

It’s fine, normal, I’d have thought. It hardly needs a campaign.

My husband would enjoy a house a plant, or something to grow in the garden, but he wouldn’t much care for flowers that die after a few days.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 21/06/2026 19:47

Yes we give dh flowers for his birthday and the boys give them for Father’s Day. The same as for me.

Sometimes it’s a plant and all our house plants have been given to us by the boys at some point for Mothers or Father’s Day

Sex makes no difference

Sounds lovely. I gave my DH flowers and he cooked me dinner on our second date.

EveryKneeShallBow · 21/06/2026 20:43

My late DH would not have wanted flowers. He never bought them for me and couldn’t understand why he might give me something that’s basically dying plant material.

What’s the basis of this campaign, though? If you want to buy them or the father will like them, what’s the problem?

DappledThings · 21/06/2026 20:49

If he would like flowers then sure. I hate them so DH never buys them for me and I wouldn't think to buy them for him.

They're just another chore. Beats me what makes them a good present when you have to faff about putting them out and making a messing doing so, they get in the way, you have to pick up dropped petals for a few days then deal with stinky old water and dead flowers making a mess again.

If they like flowers or plants, why not? Have bought DH flowers before. Father’s Day is often a big bushy tomato plant. He likes tomato plants and one from the nursery cuts out the hassle. This year’s is a container variety, about 3 foot tall and loaded with blossoms and quite a few fruit already. He is delighted
