Asked for restaurant bill, and just got brought a card machine and total figure...

Is this usual now?
Went to a pub for food, been there plenty of times, asked for the bill at the end and they just came over with a card machine and told us "that's £120*".

We were just one family (*I've made up the price), two adults with kids, so unlikely to be splitting it. But I like to see what's been charged for, if tip is included (we always tip), particularly as last time we went to this pub in a group they repeatedly got the total wrong because of not applying offers etc.

Normal waiter service to table etc.

As it was about what we'd expected, we just paid it but now I'm wondering if we should have asked for the actual bill?
Anyone else experienced this and would you want the actual bill?

I think you should have been given the physical bill if you asked for it, sounds like the waiter was just a bit too enthusiastic and thought youjust wanted to pay, is this a regular place you go to ?

If I was parting with any money at all, I’d want a bill. No exceptions.

This happened to me and I asked for a receipt before paying.

Id absolutely want an itemised bill. Restaurants can make mistakes. In the same way I don’t go to Tesco and accept ‘£130 please’

That sounds dodgy as hell! Never seen that happen and would definitely want to see a bill. How would you even know that was for sure your total and not accidentally the next table's?
