Jewellers: should diamond rings be worn 24/7

I have a ring that was a special gift and wore it more than I should - lost a diamond and have learned my lesson. But this was a band with 12 small diamonds in ie probs shouldn’t be everyday.

however, what about eg an engagement ring (band with single diamond)? I can’t be arsed to take it off every time I shower or sleep so that means i won’t wear it.

does it depend on the style of ring? Can’t find a consensus anywhere! Thanks

I wear my engagement ring, which has three diamonds, almost 24/7, I only take it off if I am painting (which happens rarely) or kneading dough. Otherwise I have worn it pretty much constantly for over 20 years. Given diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, what do you think will happen to them?

I wear my rings every day, plus shower and sleep in them. I only remove for the gym. Jewellery is made to be worn. So wear and enjoy it.

I wear mine 24/7 but it's a bezel setting and not going anywhere. If I had claws, I'd get them checked and tightened annually.

I agree with the other posters. I have a diamond engagement ring and a wedding ring with channel set diamonds all around. I only take them off to clean them.

I don’t wear my rings all the time (engagement ring with single diamond plus wedding ring has tiny diamonds in it) because I am very hands on with stuff around the house and garden and have knocked the engagement ring setting once that the diamond needed to be reset plus needed a replacement in the wedding ring when I lost one of them. I think if you don’t do a lot of physical DIY etc then perhaps it doesn’t matter but for me I don’t want to restrict what I do so my rings get worn when I am out shopping or at a restaurant (e.g. not very often)

Diamonds are very tough, though they experience cleavage and are not unbreakable. Far less tough are the claws that often hold the diamond in place. So whether you keep hold of the diamond greatly depends on the quality of the metal work surrounding it.

If it's bezel set daily wear will be fine, though regardless of setting, I still recommend removing before any activity where the ring could get bashed, caught or damaged.

Thanks all. Engagement ring is claw, don’t know about setting of the big one but the diamonds got very loose - it was 12 all in a row. We were told the setting had significant wear too so we have to take it back in 6 months to get it built up. So happy to keep that one for special occasions but think I’ll risk the claw set engagement one!

I have a large solitaire on my engagement ring plus small diamonds on my wedding ring and then a diamond half eternity, which I wear on my other hand. All are really good stones (flawless or almost flawless) so I am quite careful with them and take them off every night and whenever I’m doing something with hands, including giving kids baths or washing dishes. I do have them insured if something happens to them but it’s not just about the value but the stones themselves as my husband chose the stones himself for the engagement ring and eternity ring so I am quite precious about them.

ouchynose · 21/06/2026 12:24

I remember my ExMIL telling me that the safest place to keep my ring was on my finger!

Which was true until the claws moved a bit and the diamond fell out and I didn’t realise it 😵

Luckily I had an eagle eyed four year old who spotted it on the kitchen floor - phew 🤣

I only take mine off for surgery/MRIs.

Otherwise I cook in it, garden, bake bread, clean the house.

Tbf it really needs a polish. The worst thing is the metal scratches because it's white gold.

shuddacuddadidnt · 21/06/2026 12:30

I'm another who will only take off rings for cleaning. Engagement ring is a 1.5 carat in a claw setting with 5 channel set diamonds on either side, and wedding ring is 10 channel set diamonds. Never had claw setting checked either. Rings 28 yrs old.

That said, if a diamond has fallen out, I will be suspicious of the delicate (?) setting and not wear the ring daily.

Doesn’t your insurance have a clause whereby you need to get the claws checked periodically? Mine does. I also have to get them revalued every 5 years. I used a different jeweller for that this time and he said it’s because people are swapping out their natural diamonds for lab grown ones, selling the natural diamond or having it made into something else, then saying they lost the ring and claiming on insurance!

Yes they have to be checked and valued every two years. I also get them professionally cleaned and polished every year but that’s not insurance reasons. I don’t think I said something in my post that suggested otherwise?

I just assumed the reason for the checking is to make sure the diamond is still held securely in place. I’ve had the policy since before the influx of lab grown diamonds.

I had some rings I didn’t wear (engagement, wedding eternity) remade after divorce. I wear the new ring every day, I only take it off to sleep because it’s chunky and I made the mistake of falling asleep on my hand, the imprint lasted until lunch time!
