I haven't exercised in over 4 years since DC arrived, and it's showing.

I'm thinking something I can put on the TV rather than an app as I'll just never get round to it on my phone.

Before DC I did lots of classes, Pilates, yoga and had started group PT to get into strength training. Not a runner, although we do have a treadmill I could use.

I need a teacher or something to guide me otherwise I lose momentum and interest.

Chloe Ting! Loads of workouts, some hiit, some weights, many different lengths. On YouTube.

I like Juice and Toya (Youtube) beginners home workouts for strength training. I normally just go on the treadmill whilst watching a half hour episode of something.

I started by just walking. Then go the free version of FitOn app. It has everything on there and various short structured routines and challenges which motivate me. Graduates to Strava and the challenges on there and added various gym equipment to use at home and classes at the leisure centre. But I like variety and to be able to choose what to do according to my mood.
My only tip is this - do what you enjoy, not what people say you should do. If you hate it, 1) you won’t stick at it 2) you’ll half arse it at best, and both of those things are a waste of your precious time.

I have 3 x regular YouTube channels (free!) I use for different things.

Yoga with Adrienne for Yoga. You can choose one of her themed ‘30 days of yoga’ courses, or select videos based on length or area of your body you want to target or things like ‘strengthening’, ‘weight loss’ ‘anxiety’ ‘relax’ etc

Caroline Girvan for weight training. She has beginners workouts, but you do need home weights for most.

Grow with Jo (I think that’s it?) for more fun, light hearted cardio. I like her low impact cardio ones best - no jumping around, but you still work up a sweat!

Yes, I walked a lot on my first mat leave (nap walks) and the weight fell off. Second time it's not so easy with a preschooler in tow and the tiredness levels have me craving sugar. I really should use the treadmill but find it uninspiring

I say it a lot on here but look for walking workouts on YouTube. They are quite fun ( one of my favourites is a mama mia one) and less chance of hurting yourself as you get going with exercising.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/06/2026 12:01

@Momrage what about things you could do at home
or at the park? Hula hooping/yoga/pilates/5 min weights whilst little have a nap or park gym equipment or just playing at running after a ball or pushing the swing with the preschooler. All movement however gained, is good exercise. A bit here and there all adds up and is still worthwhile. When yous are older you’ll have a good base line to add in other things.
A lot of people dislike treadmills. Personally I find them great as I can indulge in binge watching without feeling guilty for wasting my time!
Do you have a partner? If so why can’t they parent whilst you have an hour to do something you like?

managingexpectations · 21/06/2026 13:28

HASfit on YouTube or they have an app and if you have a smart tv you can play it from your phone to the tv.
There are loads of workouts varying in length/intensity and his wife does “easier” adapted moves if you find it a bit tough going.
They have cardi, strength and stretching routines. I bloody love them
