The other thread was getting way too depressing.

Where have you visited recently that isn't a shithole?

I will say Inverness.

Had a really excellent Easter weekend in Margate.
Art, good food, vintage shops, beach, more good food, arcades for the kids, and dreamland too! We really enjoyed ourselves.

We went to Dorset recently...everywhere was lovely and clean and the food was great. Their seagulls were also better behaved than ours!

A bit random but the whole of the 272/273 bus journey between Brighton and Crawley is lovely as you go through all the villages (not good if you are in a rush but I use it to go on days out to Wakehurst or Tilgate park without without the car)

Rye

Following for suggestions of somewhere dh and I could go this summer. We're a bit lacking in inspiration.

We had a lovely holiday in Dorset last year too. Beautiful weather, beautiful beaches. And not madly busy like we imagined it might be.

luckylavender · 21/06/2026 08:47

Harrogate

DierdreDaphne · 21/06/2026 08:47

Well to pick one from the other thread, we were in Dunstable visiting family over Christmas and what we saw of it was clean, pleasant, lively and friendly. Not going to win any prizes for architecture or scenery , but where we were seemed very tidy and well-kept..

CandyflossKid · 21/06/2026 08:48

Just come back from Inverness which we really liked

Silverbirchleaf · 21/06/2026 08:54

Glencoe in Scotland - stunning. Actually just driving around Scotland was beautiful.

Kent coast - lots of different coastal towns, with different characters, from picturesque Whistable to sandy beaches of Joss bay and Botany Bay, to Deal and Folkstone etc

Yes, Poole is absolutely lovely. I want to go to Brownsea Island next time I go.

Apart from the Dolphin Centre. Boring fact: I didn't know it was originally called the Arndale Centre, like another twenty 1960s monstrosities across England.

Whitby is beautiful and interesting.
Tenby is very charming and picturesque.
Dorset, particularly Swanage. Lovely atmosphere and lots to do.

PinkNBlueBunnies · 21/06/2026 09:00

Berkhamsted
Just a really pleasant place to be on many levels.
If I win the lottery and don’t need to live near my job, I’m buying a house in Berkhamsted.

Peak District - Bakewell, Chatsworth, Eyam, Matlock. Had a nice weekend in Manchester. I prefer Liverpool but haven't been since covid. We had a lovely week staying in Dover Castle in a tower built in time of Henry II. Dover is a bit sad these days, but has some lovely bits and stunning scenery.

DoubleShotEspresso · 21/06/2026 09:26

Southbourne beach-just so beautiful and calm there, beautiful views and very few people.
Rye -we had great fun pottering and the local fish restaurants were amazing.

Feelingshotshotshot · 21/06/2026 09:31

I visited Swanage last year and loved it. I also had a great weekend in Brixham.

The Isles of Scilly never disappoint for me.

HoppityBun · 21/06/2026 09:31

I haven’t been, but Northumberland wasn’t mentioned and I’d like to visit Alnmouth.

I very much want to go to Pittenween, but it’s a tricky journey without a car.

idontknow54789 · 21/06/2026 09:33

Mersea Island. Went camping recently and really loved all the oyster shacks, crabbing etc

I second Rye been there a few times and Camber sands is a lovely beach.

I love Woolacombe though small surf town but amazing beach and good restaurants

St. Ives is unbeatable, incredible beaches, a colourful harbour, traditional fishing cottage’s, plenty of art galleries and shops, Tate, Hepworth museum, excellent bakeries, cafes and restaurants. Plus driving around surrounding villages and coves gives plenty of choice for changes of scenery.

Divebar2021 · 21/06/2026 09:45

St Ives is beautiful but my god the crowds are too much. I like Lyme Regis and below radar Folkestone which is a bit rough around the edges but has a seemingly great art and food scene. I also like Dungeness which is cinematic and very other wordly.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 21/06/2026 09:53

happy to see the Dorset love! Think Bournemouth was mentioned on the ahithole thread. I get that the town centre’s not great but some parts of it are nice- Westbourne is a good local shopping area and Southbourne is part of Bournemouth too and that’s lovely. Talbot Woods is also nice.

monty2020 · 21/06/2026 09:58

Tintern Abbey, absolutely beautiful scenery and also Cwmcarn scenic drive you could think you’re in Canada .

TheeNotoriousPIG · 21/06/2026 10:51

Fair Isle!

Also, I am eternally grateful to have moved away from near one of the places listed on the 'Worst Places' thread. Moving away was on my 'to-do' list from childhood. I swapped it for a beautiful part of NE Wales.

mindutopia · 21/06/2026 11:27

I can’t say I’ve noticed a massive post-COVID change where we are and I’ve lived in two totally different parts of the South West during and since COVID. Shops have closed and new shops have opened. All the pubs are still here. The shitty areas are still shitty like they always have been. But the nice areas are still nice. People a bit more racist unfortunately.

But everywhere within spitting distance is a Tory stronghold so I think there is a reason they let other bits of the country go to shit and not this bit. I am not of that political persuasion at all, but decline in the UK is not by accident or because of COVID. There’s a reason some bits are shittier than others. 🙄

I can’t think of anywhere lately that I’ve been that hasn’t been nice. But I’m also not originally from the UK, and my home country is a real shithole, so maybe my perspective is skewed. 😂

Gardengargoyle · 21/06/2026 19:45

The Gower.
