Anyone keep their recycling bins outside?

Not the big ones obviously, but their smaller recycling caddies?

I have a very small kitchen and am doing it up a little. I bought these bins from ikea to stack for paper, plastic and general (non food) waste but the place that I planned on putting them just doesn't work.

I was thinking of having them outside, just next to the backdoor, maybe in a little mini shed? And I could put my mop/sweeping brush/bucket etc in there too?

Its not feasible for me to take the recycling out each time I have something to bin as I live in a terrace with a locked alley for the large, plus a lock on my gate so it's quite a kerfuffle.

What are you asking for? Permission? If it works for you do it. It’s irrelevant whether others do it or not.

underseige05 · 20/06/2026 16:56

We just have an aldi bag hung on the cupboard under the sink it gets taken to the recycling bins at the side of of house once or twice a day.
We never let it get full and I couldn't be bothered with boxes at the back door but if it works for you go for it

CornishCornetto · 20/06/2026 17:11

We have a smallish caddy inside for all recycling, and every time it gets full we take it outside and divide up the stuff into the proper recycling boxes/bags for our council area. I think taking every single thing outside will get frustrating pretty quickly so you need some way to store it inside.

Why use these ikea caddies outside? Why not just put straight into the boxes that your council will collect?

whoami24601 · 20/06/2026 17:13

We had these outside and they worked well. It might be worth drilling a few holes in the bottom so they don't collect water. They do need cleaning regularly too

Garfieldloveslasagnepie · 20/06/2026 17:13

We keep ours outside. I have a small box in the utility where we put the recycling and once it’s full someone takes it outside

Shinyhappyapple · 20/06/2026 18:16

I keep my large blue bin which takes mixed recycling directly outside my kitchen door .

joyava · 20/06/2026 18:33

I think it’s a good idea in principle, but the mini shed you posted will not accommodate those Ikea boxes. The shed is a nice design so I’d probably look at getting smaller boxes for that.

I explained why I cannot do that in my post.

I think your opening post may have a missing word so it’s not making much sense to me - you have a locked alley for the large what? Is it a communal recycling bin? I’ve only known houses to have individual recycling bins so maybe I’m not understanding the set up.

Sorry, the missing word is bins. Our bins are round the back of our houses but in an alley area that has a locked gate because of fly tipping and loitering issues. They are normal individual bins but behind a locked gate. Some people choose to have them at the front of their houses instead to avoid this but we don't have front gardens so I feel that obstructs the pavement and looks scruffy. Also that means bringing rubbish through the house/ hall which I don't like to do.

There is also a lock on my garden gate that leads to that alley so in order for me to put something in the bins I have to open 2 locks. So its easier to have large caddies that we fill up and empty at longer intervals.

We just use 2 bins like these for our recycling/non recycling. They are hidden behind the kitchen door (we never close it) so can’t really see them.

We've got a garden cushion box outside the back door for ours, £30 from b&q.
Works really well

Why can’t you put the recycling boxes or bins at the back door where you plan to put the shed and caddies?

AbsoluteHoot · 21/06/2026 15:00

There’s no way I’m having those hideous caddies in the kitchen. Ours live outside alongside the big bins. Our -concealed within a cupboard- kitchen bin is separated into food waste and non-food waste and the food waste compostable bag goes into the caddy outside.

If my law-abiding husband is away for work, I do no separating of food. I just throw everything in the general waste.

Because they will fill with water if it rains? They have a concaved lid and little open bits where water can get in.

I also have dogs that would be trying to get in them all the time.

Get the little shed for the little bins. It looks great and will work for you and your lifestyle/doggies. Just do it.

Sidebeforeself · 21/06/2026 15:41

I do this. I have a large plastic bin that I put plastics and glass in . I have plastic caddies inside with handles. When full we just carry round to the main recycling bin. Paper we keep in a cupboard and then put everything in a paper bag .. carry outside to the paper bin. Keeps my kitchen free of rubbish.

CornishCornetto · 21/06/2026 16:39

Ah, thank you for explaining, I think I get it now! Is that shed big enough for the number of caddies you need? Something like that would work well and look nice. There are slightly bigger but similar shed options at dunster house.

Plimfoot · 21/06/2026 16:47

I ended up ordering a bigger shed but its still quite shallow and till will fit nicely against the wall. I can fit the bins and other cleaning items in there and hopefully it will work to stop recycling just piling up on the countertop.
