Builder asking for payment after cash paid and VAT quote concerns

AmIbeingscammed · 20/06/2026 14:28

I had a quote for landscaping that said including vat. Work has been done and I paid £1000 by bank transfer for some materials prior to completion. The chap then called round and asked for £1000 in cash to pay his workers ( I was waiting for an ambulance to come as was extremely unwell with a raging infection) I paid the £1000 cash.
He has now messaged me asking if he can come round for payment, I said to send me an invoice including the vat breakdown and I will pay. I don't think he is vat registered but does seem to be a registered Ltd company.
I just have a bad feeling, I'm still not well and he told me whilst the work was in progress that one of the workers was due in court for putting his fist through someone's window. I would never have agreed to employing his services if I had known this.
I'm cross with myself for paying the cash , I'm worried he'll come round and mess up the work that's been done.
He finished the job 3 days ago.

I think @AmIbeingscammed has been really clear here.

Job total £6700 The invoice stated 'including VAT', which implies VAT registration
£1000 paid by bank transfer for materials
£1000 paid by cash for his workers (amazing that you managed to do that while waiting for an ambulance! He should be very happy)

Now the work is done and the OP wanted an updated invoice showing VAT breakdown and interim payments made. Builder says 'I'll come and collect'

OP doesn't want this, so builder sends invoice that gives the outstanding balance, but no mention of VAT. It has an automated bank payment link, which she has used.

Now, he wants payment to a different account, but she has already paid to the nominated account.

I can see why you're worried @AmIbeingscammed

Yes this is exactly it, thank you.
I have paid the business account as per the invoice and automated payment method , he wanted me to pay his personal account .
He now wants me to call him when I am feeling better. And to whoever mentioned that I can't be that unwell because I'm posting on here, I feel rough (came out of hospital last night) but have not been rendered totally incapable.

My bank doesn't allow me to make cash withdrawals of more than £250 per day anyway

Of course they do, loads of people have cash in their house for lots of different reasons

Lol, no they don't. It's a cashless society!

I don't know anyone that has £1k in cash just lying around in their house

You say he sent you an invoice with a payment link which suggests it was sent from some kind of computer accounting software, which imo is at least an indication that hes above board. Is it a limited company?

Yes it is a Ltd company, on companies house.
, but he wanted me to pay his personal account .

Mumsnet is some weird kind of micro universe where no uses cash while in the real world it's totally normal to pay by cash

I do keep cash hidden in my house, which is why I could pay him for the workers, although he never mentioned any cash payments in the first instance.

It's £4,700k outstanding bill. No, I do not think most people would be leaving that kind of serious money laying around their house just on the off-chance they may need it.

Sometimes I don't think people read the thread or have any inkling how ordinary people live!

It’s obviously not a cashless society

Ok but you know that doesn't mean that no one has cash in their house, right?

There are absolutely millions of homes in England, how many are you talking about?

Why would anyone tell you they have large amounts of money hid in their house?

Clearly you are lying OP, don't you know that no one has cash in the house

Some posters have very little life experience it often seems

Why would anyone tell you they have large amounts of money hid in their house?

Why would anyone even be asking people they know how much cash they have ?

Methinks @JoyousOpalLemur might not actually have asked anyone and assumes the whole world is the same as her

Nobody said they do. Had you read my post that you initially responded to, you would've seen that she owed over £4k.

Things on here would be much easier if people read first, instead of a thread derail as to if anyone has cash in their homes. Sigh.

SparklyGlitterballs · 20/06/2026 17:59

Just message him back saying you paid promptly when he sent the automated invoice and used the link provided. Add that if he needs it in another account he'll need to transfer it himself.

Are you a single woman OP? Do you think he may try to intimidate you? I can see no reason for him to visit your home if you've paid.

Edited

I don't understand, why would one person not having a particular sum of money to hand mean that it's a cashless society?

Yep single women living alone

I think him wanting it to be paid to a personal bank account is dodgy as hell. With one job alone being over £7000 he surely must have a turnover of over £90 000?

You've paid him the balance OP, why is he coming round again? That sounds dodgy as well.

It doesn't. It was tongue in cheek to your daft response tbh.

Cheerio.

What was the point of your post about not knowing anyone who has £1000 in their house?

Was it just a random observation rather than being a contribution to the discussion?

The OP has said she did have that amount in her house
