Do abusive celebrities have too much presence in TV adverts?

What is it with abusers and their prominence in adverts that are beamed into our homes through sales associated with TV channels?

Brad Pitt for De'Longhi. Jonny Depp and Sauvage.

I appreciate it's up to the company to employ who they want but I really don't want to have their images forced on me just because I'm watching UK tv channels. I can choose whether to watch their movies or not.

I don’t think having Jonny Depp advertise Sauvage reflects well on Dior at all.

I find it bewildering that Jason Manford gets so many advertising jobs after it emerged he was using his fame to send dick pics to multiple women (while married)

Totally agree, he looks like he stinks! And not of Sauvage!

Even more reason for advertisers to use unknown actors in their adverts: not only can they pay them a much, much lower 'ordinary person' fee; but if they turn out to be guilty of bad things, the public won't instantly recognise them and connect the crime/wrongdoing with the adverts and the product.

I suppose it mostly comes down to money for the advertisers: if more people will buy the product because of the celeb promoting it than will avoid buying it specifically because of that celeb and what they've done off-screen, they probably consider it a win.

I know ‘sauvage’ means ‘wild’ but in the context of Depp, ‘savage’ seems far more appropriate.

But I agree, Dior should have known better.

I think the Dior deal predates amber heard maybe? And he ‘won’ so maybe they can’t ditch him. Can’t stand him though, there’s a whole fan club of middle aged women who seem to adore him.

JD is also a Roman Polanski supporter. Horrid men

pimplebum · 20/06/2026 11:56

I think you are missing a crucial word “ alleged “ the law has not punished these men

but in that note i was horrified at a packed cinema watching Micheal Jackson and a friend excitedly watching the stage version

hate listening to elvis lyrics or hearing Charlie chaplin reveared

@AddledPeacock I don’t think having Jonny Depp advertise Sauvage reflects well on Dior at all. Couldn't agree more!

And while he technically won and has his fan club, there are a LOT of people that understand how a multimillionaire can get away with just about anything by buying the best legal representation possible (Michael Jackson?). Surely a brand like Dior should understand they're alienating a large section of their customer base? Unless Dior is more interested in upholding the patriarchy than sales?

Not getting a conviction doesn't sway public opinion though @pimplebum. Fans are fans regardless (Michael Jackson) but the shine is massively off Depp now. Just like Justin Baldoni (although I'm not sure if he promotes any brands).
