There are more and more benefits/pensions threads appearing. The answer always seems to descend into the same answer of universal basic income
based on the current total benefits bill (including pensions) and current population, there would be enough for each adult to receive £5k, each child to receive £2k, and each person currently receiving highest rate PIP to get an additional £20k per year.
If that was the sum total of all benefits available, do you think that would really be enough?
I lean towards the idea of UBI being the answer, but I’m not sure the sums really stack up and the whole point would be for it to be no more expensive than the current welfare bill. I suppose there would (theoretically) be a greater tax take, and we would save money on the admin costs of the current welfare system which might put a bit more in the pot, but even then would it be reasonable?
