When did we stop saying DD1 (7)?

When I joined MN, we all said DC1 for our firstborn and then DC2 etc. We would then put their age in brackets. Eg. DC1 (12) and DC2 (3). I’m seeing so many people talk about DD7 or DS12 and it always takes me a while to realise they don’t have loads of children! When did it change? I think the old way was much clearer.

I agree, but now that most people are typing on smartphones with predictive text 'my 12yo daughter' is just as quick and even clearer. DD could be dear dog. DH often isn't dear. DF could be friend, father or fiance. DS could be dear sister or son.

I miss this too! And have noticed the shift to DD9 and DS12 as the default.

I’m more confused when you see DSD or DSS2 or EXDh I have to think then .

Personally, I think it's time this DH, DS, DD nonsense dies a death. They're very rarely darling and it makes stories where sisters and sons and fathers and fiancés get involved unnecessarily complicated. Also really doesn't save any time typing. Agree that ages in brackets are helpful though and prevents drip feeding.

"DS at sleepover with girls?!".... four posts later and you find out he's 26.

SamClamsDisco · 19/06/2026 06:10

I've been on mumsnet for twenty years (yikes) and I've never once typed D-anything.

(apart from just then)

Edited

Agree and with the poster who said H is rarely D! It’s a bit cringey imo

Shock and they let you stay Wink

I’ve also been here 20 years. Joined as a baby teacher, pre-kids to keep up with what mums were saying and used to access it on my laptop!
In recent years I’ve seen fewer posts confirming credentials being. I can’t remember the last time I saw a post saying Long time lurker; penis beaker, cutted up pears etc.

I personally like the unique DD, DS language but sometimes I’ll read a whole thread and have no idea if it’s Darling son or Darling sister.

Berlinlover · 19/06/2026 06:53

This “D” nonsense is the greatest load of shite. Absolute cringe.

HoraceCope · 19/06/2026 06:59

and dear friend
dear father

i always read it as dear rather than darling

Sunandsunshine · 19/06/2026 07:18

Its actually bf that confuses me the most. I always assume it's boyfriend when it's quite often best friend. Which really does put a different slant on the narrative.

PuppyMonkey · 19/06/2026 07:30

The worst one is GF where you have to read about three pages to work out whether it’s girlfriend or grandfather or gluten free. Grin
