Tell me about impacted wisdom teeth removal in hospital

thecuree · 18/06/2026 12:30

Went to get it out this morning as planned and they did one of those 360 x rays, saw how deep and wide the tooth is and think that it’s sitting on a main nerve so won’t touch it. I’ve now been referred to the hospital for a CT scan to take a closer look where the nerve is.

Do they always put you to sleep for impacted wisdom teeth?

thanks

I used to work in day case surgery. We did a dental list one day a week. Absolutely without fail, everyone had a general anaesthetic.

Iwanttobeafraser · 18/06/2026 12:36

Mine was 30 years ago but yes, it was in a hospital, under GA. I was young so obviousl ybounced back pretty quickly, but I don't remember it being a particularly traumatic event - the bruising and swelling was bad as they took all four out so I looked like a beaten up chipmunk for about 10 days - but the actual experience was fine. And from memory, I wasn't under for a particularly long time.

QueenOfSwedenRose · 18/06/2026 12:37

I had it done under GA 40 years ago.

Even just for one tooth?

I had a general anaesthetic for both my impacted wisdom teeth. Went in as a day case to hospital in the morning, discharged in the afternoon. Was sore for a week afterwards and swollen but not too bad. I was lucky I recovered quickly.

DaisyChain505 · 18/06/2026 12:39

I’m the biggest baby ever in medical situations and I had three removed in one go. Was absolutely fine and nothing to worry about.

Yes.

Mydogisagentleman · 18/06/2026 12:42

Had two done.
The first one I paid for because the NHS refused. £3.5k. Fabulous head and neck surgeon. Had it done at 10.00 left hospital st 11.30. Eating lunch by 13.00.
2nd was recently. I was bruised nipple to nose and couldn't eat for about 3 days.

Emmasblackboard · 18/06/2026 12:43

I had general anaesthetic for all four impacted wisdom teeth, over 30 years ago. I was mid-twenties, stayed overnight and was very lucky with no swelling.

Shinyandnew1 · 18/06/2026 12:58

I had all four of mine removed in hospital under local anaesthetic. Two impacted, two not. It was horrific and I wouldn’t recommend it.

No. weirdly, I was young (late teens) and my dentist had just thought my wisdom teeth weren't coming out (in those days, routine x rays weren't a thing). then he noticed that my teeth were starting to get less straight .... so he sent me off for an x ray and discovered all four were in there, fully impacted, and were impactng the way the rest of my teeth were behaving. So he whipped them out!

rocketman84 · 18/06/2026 13:06

Had my impacted wisdom tooth extracted under GA in hospital last year. It honestly wasn’t half as bad as I expected, yes there was swelling and pain after but i found it very manageable. They recommended that I had it done under GA as it would be a bit of a traumatic extraction due to having to break the tooth up etc to get it out, so I’m glad I wasn’t aware of any of it.

Givemeausernamepls · 18/06/2026 13:09

I had mine and the adjacent tooth (wisdom tooth had a made a hole in it!) out last year. Was fine and I drove home and felt fine afterwards. It’s was actually better than having one out at dentist tbh

MotherofPufflings · 18/06/2026 13:09

My adult son has just had 3 impacted wisdom teeth taken out over 2 separate appointments. Both times under local. The most recent one needed cutting into pieces to remove and he needed a top-up of local. He said it was OK though.

QueenOfSwedenRose · 18/06/2026 13:09

Just to add this was all 4

backinthebox · 18/06/2026 13:27

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out under sedation this year. Reading stories in places like this and listening to friends who were keen to tell me all the gory details of their experiences, I was mentally prepared for the worst experience of my life. However, it was all fine - in and out of dental surgery in under 90mins with an excellent and quick recovery. So if you are after reassurance you probably won’t find it in places (like this!) where people like to tell you the worst case scenario.

I had 2 impacted lower wisdom teeth, one lying deep in the jaw along the nerve with a pocket of infection beneath it beginning to degrade the jawbone. For various reasons (including needing longer time off work for each surgery I would have due to medical fitness read my job) it was decided to take all 4 out at once. I had it done privately in order that I could choose a time convenient to me, but the surgeon was an NHS consultant. My appointment time was 10am and I was at home in bed by noon. I slept the sedative off for the rest of that day, felt not bad at all days 2&3, day 4 was the worst day, but I was back working again on day 14. I definitely needed a week off, but I would say it was considerable discomfort rather than pain. I am in my 50s, and stories I’d read put me off having them out ages ago but I should have had them out sooner. It really wasn’t that bad.

TeaandHobnobs · 18/06/2026 13:29

I had one impacted wisdom tooth removed when my first child was 6 months old. As I was still breastfeeding, I chose not to have any sedation (I don't think GA was offered). Yes it was a pretty unpleasant half an hour, but I used hypnobirthing techniques to get through it. I found the pain / recovery afterwards worse, in a way, because I didn't have a time limit on when it would stop!

thecuree · 18/06/2026 13:35

Thanks all for your input. I’ve had 2 x sections, an egg retrieval under sedation and was put to sleep to have a cyst by my spine removed, so I shouldn’t be nervous but I think it’s because it’s still in my jaw under the gum and I’m worried about the pain afterwards. I think because it’s still below the gum line they will have to use the drill people have mentioned 😭

Mine were done under a local, at different times. With the first one my option was having it done soon under a local, and only the impacted tooth giving me trouble removed, or waiting a long time and having them all done under a general. As I had professional exams coming up I just wanted it sorted, as I had been having a lot of pain. A few years later the other impacted one started giving me trouble so my dentist rereferred me to the dental hospital and that was also done under a local.

The local was fine - and due to the commentary between the senior dentist and the trainee (quite interesting!) I know mine wasn’t very straight forward and it took a while.

with the first one they explained that if I wanted a general they would take out all my wisdom teeth at that time, even the ones not causing problems, as it was most cost effective, rather than giving me another general if I needed the others doing later.

AbsoluteHoot · 18/06/2026 13:37

I had all 4 removed under GA. Absolutely fine, no issues whatsoever. I took the day off, but was back at work the following day.

thecuree · 18/06/2026 13:45

Did everyone have swelling after, even just for one tooth?

MidnightMeltdown · 18/06/2026 13:47

They gave me a choice - local or general. If you opt for general then you need to have someone to collect you

There was a bit of swelling, but I wouldn’t say that it was really bad

youalright · 18/06/2026 13:53

Ive had 3 done under local anesthetic all at different times and everytime I've said never again they can put me to sleep because its horrific but its like having a baby you soon forget and think it will be ok. Its not if they offer take the G.A
