Varifocal Contact Lenses

Does anyone wear varifocal contact lenses? How do you get on with them?

I've tried in the past but they still aren't good enough for computer work and reading piano music - so I'd need reading glasses on top, I think?

But I do like the idea of not having to wear glasses all day every day.

Any thoughts?

I have them. Mine are gas permeable though. Work well for computer etc. just sewing in the evening I need a pair of reading glasses for. Love them

They are a compromise, slightly worse long sight vs better reading sight. Mine are OK for computer but not much good for small text so I add ready readers. Driving sight is fine.

Get your optician to experiment.

Same. For close work I need reading glasses on top but otherwise they are great

I was very disappointed and gave up on them because I still needed reading glasses. I thought the point of contacts was you didn’t need glasses? But it sounds like others like them and don’t mind the reading glasses.

Gas permeable lenses (hard) are available with 3 fields of vision: distance, reading, computer. Not all opticians can supply them, so ask around. Hard lenses take up to 6 weeks to get used to but they last a few years if you look after them as instructed. I have worn hard lenses for 60 years and have used gas permeable ones since they became available. My wearing time is mostly 7am to 10 or 11pm daily.

Been wearing them for several years, agree they are a compromise. I cannot drive with them in the dark or low light, and my near sight is much better without them. They are fine for everyday things, and I don't have a problem using the computer.

No solution is perfect, I guess you just have to decide what your priorities are

I have them and don’t find them a compromise, love them

This is mostly my experience too. Short bursts on a computer are ok but I prefer to stick to single vision readers when spending all day at my laptop

They are a compromise but work really well imo.

My optician really takes his time to agree with me what reading distance/middle distance etc I prefer so as to get the best combination. I then have five pairs of ready readers that I leave in various places in order to always have one to hand!

Mine are good for distance but not so good for reading and knitting. I have cheap reading glasses that I have to wear if I’m at my desk.

bestbefore · 17/06/2026 21:20

I’m using mine to read this!
took a while to get used to them but now largely ok. Haven’t worn my reading specs since I got them. Mine are daily disposable ones.
