In the market for a new electric toothbrush

Could I have your recommendations please? I am not interested in fancy features like connecting to apps and where buying replacement heads becomes more expensive than the toothbrush itself, but I do want something that works really well. My teeth have a tendency to build plaque very quickly, I have sensitive teeth and gums. Thanks!

My DH's extremely good dental hygienist (lecturer in dental hygiene) recommends the bog standard Oral B toothbrush with round heads. The cheapest most basic version.

Yes, same here.

Any in particular? I've used Oral-B Vitality and I don't like it at all.

the really basic 'entry level' Braun Oral B one doesn't have a charging indicator which is annoying so I would say the next one up would be better they are about £35.00, it should specify if it has a charging indictor in the blurb

We have several (usually bought when someone forgot during packing) and while I loved my ancient Braun Ultrasonic brush, which was very smooth and quiet, the heads were discontinued ages ago so DH asked which replacement to get.

That was her answer. Ours have a light showing when they are charging, and signal every thirty seconds with a longer signal after two minutes.

TeaAndStrumpets · 17/06/2026 17:18

Yes basic Braun. I always use the Flexi Soft (?) heads.

Papyrophile · 17/06/2026 17:19

Plus floss, and interdental brushes.

I have used various Braun Oral B and like their special sensitive brush heads. However they seem to be replacing everything with iO branding and these iO brush heads do not fit the older brush types. I have a lot of old brush heads in stock so will not change to iO brush until I have to. I prefer the small round brush heads with pressure sensor. No need for apps I agree.

lechatdhenri · 17/06/2026 17:23

I wouldn’t get the braun io if you have sensitive teeth/gums. I upgraded and had sore gums then eventually bleeding gums with it. I assumed it was maybe a transition or something else but every time I started using it again after a break I got the same thing so gave up. I don’t have gum disease or anything, it was just the brush being incredibly harsh.
if you don’t like oral b though, a basic sonicare (or just an older model if you want to charge it in the bathroom) would be worth trying.

unsync · 17/06/2026 17:25

Philips Sonic. Much prefer it to Braun Oral B.

PermanentTemporary · 17/06/2026 17:26

My dental hygienist told me in no uncertain terms to get the Oral B io3 or io4. I have really quite bad gum disease though and am facing losing teeth in the next few years. It wasn’t cheap but the results so far are impressive.

Wonderknicks · 17/06/2026 17:27

I have a braun that I use at home & a suri which I use for traveling as the charge lasts for ages. I prefer the braun but I think only because that's what I have always used. The suri is more recyclable.

measuretwicecutonce · 17/06/2026 17:29

I had a very old Oral B and the battery completed died. Bought an iO and wish I’d just got a big standard. As others have said the heads are twice the price and I must admit I don’t like bigger and heavier body but I’m stuck with it now.

Malasana · 17/06/2026 17:37

I have a Suri. I love it. The charge lasts for weeks.
The heads are expensive to replace though.

BIossomtoes · 17/06/2026 18:27

Oral B io heads are nearly always in Boots £10 Tuesday deals. I’ve got an io3 and am very happy with it. It retails at around £65 now.

AudHvamm · 17/06/2026 18:31

I have had a Suri for 2.5 years and I love it. My dentist has commented on the clean and seems impressed.

Much better sustainability than plastic toothbrushes and they do replace parts and repair. The heads are not more expensive than the official Oral B etc ones. I did the subscription for the first 2 years and built up a supply so have cancelled this year while I use them up.

PunnyLurker · 17/06/2026 18:31

I can't stand the vibrations of the Braun (made my nose itch!), so I switched to Philips Sonic and never looked back.

BessieSurtees · 17/06/2026 19:34

We all use Ordo Sonic, inexpensive, different settings and long lasting charge

Same here - the tickling drive me crazy.

I use the Phillips sonic diamond which is quite expensive but the basic sonicare one is good too

I second this. Not knowing when the battery is charged (or about to die) is VERY annoying.

mixingplaydoh · 17/06/2026 19:54

I’ve just bought a Suri and am really pleased with it. Got so fed up of my Oral B’s shit battery life.

CraftyNavySeal · 17/06/2026 20:03

Don't get the Oral B io, the stupid heads are extortionate.

In Boots it's currently £25 for 4 heads and that is supposed to be half price!
