WETWANG - and other ridiculous places names

We're driving to the Yorkshire coast and will shortly pass through th village of Wetwang. Since the children were tiny we all yell Wetwang!!! in the car as we spot the sign. They are adults now but I still do it even on my own.

Penistone was declared imaginary by a visiting American friend, so if we pass that way we always say "You cannot be serious" just the way she did.

Anyone else have daft family ritual/habits on a road trip?

I’ve driven through Intercourse in Pennsylvania with friends who lived in Philadelphia and then Wilmington (Delaware).

I used to work with someone who was from Intercourse Pennsylvania!

He had a map of the area in his office and proudly pointed to it when he shared this information, as he did with anyone new to the office.

I just so happen to have a random OS map on the table next to me of Shrewsbury and surrounding area (Landranger 126), so I have opened it in honour of this thread and found, in no particular order:

Oaf's Orchard
Baggy Moor
Clive
Crumpwell
Lower Grimmer and Upper Grimmer (I wonder which is worse)
Cross Houses
Bluebell
Waterloo
Brickwalls
Tarts Hill
Grimpo

I want to visit those places now.😁

Every time we drive past Cross Houses, one of us will always exclaim "It's Angry Bungalows!"

Middle, Nether and Over Wallop in Hampshire. DGPs lived in Nether and we lived at Middle for a while.

'Wendy cum shingay' near me…

PenelopeAsks · 17/06/2026 13:48

I live not too far from Cockpole Green.

Thoroughly recommend the fish and chips there btw 😂

Pescatarian, so I can't eat chips in East Yorkshire unfortunately. They all seem to use dripping.

We have a semicock road. And also Muff and the famous Muff diving club.

Twatt is a village on Orkney. I visited Orkney with my mum so wasn’t able to snigger at that.

Also one in Shetland! I visited with a friend and there was much sniggering, though the sign was the most exciting thing about it.

It must mean something in Norse

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/06/2026 13:56

The village of Knockin has a shop. IYKYK.
There is a Grope Lane in Shrewsbury that used to be Gropecunt Lane.

Cornwall has some good ones, like the aforementioned Ding Dong. A particular favourite is the village of Greensplat near St Austell. There's also a Scurlage and a Scredda, both of which sound like some kind of livestock affliction. Blunts, Quethiock, Polyphant....many bizarre sounding names.

Brown Willy.

I know where it is, but for those that don’t. Google is your mate, or possibly not!

FuzzyPuffling · 17/06/2026 14:03

Minions in Cornwall used to have little yellow creatures in blue dungarees on its village signs.
I have a feeling they get replaced when they are removed by officialdom.

I still love the fact that South Yorkshire Police HQ is based in Letsby Avenue!!

😂😂

There’s a very famous Iron Age archaeological site near Wetwang. It’s called Wetwang Slack.

You're drifting dangerously into Biggus Dickus territory with that one.

SerendipityCat · 17/06/2026 14:34

I was always intrigued by the village of Strubby in Lincolnshire. It sounds like it should be an adjective to me, maybe a cross between stubby and scruffy...?

"What's her new boyfriend like?"
"Well, to be honest he's a bit strubby..."

suburberphobe · 17/06/2026 14:43

There's a place in The Netherlands called Sexbierum, bier being the Dutch word for beer.

It always makes me chuckle seeing it.

TransportNerd · 17/06/2026 14:53

Best address in the country - Basic Slag Road, Scunthorpe.

Brilliant, isn’t it? They do say truth is stranger than fiction 😁

According to Bill Bryson’s book Mother Tongue, there used to be a Gropecunt Lane in London!

Was it what one of my aunts would have described as 'a less salubrious area'.

The mayor of Wetwang often tells me what my weather's going to be.

Oh definitely, according to Wikipedia, it signalled that prostitution occurred in the area. Apparently it was common practice for medieval street names to reflect their function.

Can you imagine a sat nav from back then. “Turn right onto Gropecunt Lane, then turn left onto Blow Job Avenue…. You have reached your destination”.

'Wendy cum shingay' near me…

I thought it was Shingay cum Wendy?

OneMerryMaker · 17/06/2026 15:48

I'm near Sandy Balls and Wilsford cum Lake. Don't fancy swimming in the latter.
