Etiquette for charging cars from plug sockets at AIRBNB

I help manage an AIRBNB. We've had a few guests bring cables / adaptors to charge electric cars from the house plugs, leaving the cables trailing out through the open windows. We don't have a formal outdoor charging point. None of them have asked if they can do it, I just see it on the CCTV of the front garden. We don't have any policy written about this in the house rules.

I have no idea how much energy is used charging electric cars from a normal plug point in your home as I don't own one.

Do you think its fair enough that a guest would want and expect to be able to charge their car from the plug points of a holiday cottage in this day and age? Is it something you do?

Bit concerned about the security issue of them leaving windows open if they go out in the other car etc...but how to word it. Should I include it as an additional "service" that we offer if they want to pay for the electricity used to charge the car, or is it not worth it?

Insight appreciated.

I think no EV charging policy until/if you can get a proper socket installed outdoors. Sure people will still do it though.

Cost at 2kw per hour and sat on charge for 15 hrs would be 21525p or 7.50 a day

continuous use at that level could cause socket to overheat or degrade over time but you have general wear and tear on any property

I think it would be stingy to ban it

It costs around 55p an hour.

depends on your supplier and the tariff -

We have an electric car. Unless a listing explicitly states they allow car charging, we assume it's not OK.

However, we have sometimes asked the owner in advance for permission, and offered to pay for the electricity (our car tells us how much electricity we've used). Some owners have said no and we've respected that. Some say yes and accept payment, and some say yes but tell us not to worry about payment if it's very low.

It's pretty cheap - we've never used more than £20 over a week long stay - but obviously adds up if you are running a business.

We also once had permission, but the electrics were not up to it - the socket got boiling hot and we stopped charging immediately as we were worried about a fire risk.

You are completely in your rights to explicitly ban electric car charging, and challenge / charge anyone not obeying your request. It's very rude to of them to do it without permission. They wouldn't expect you to pay for their petrol.

I think you'd be better getting a proper charging point and including the cost on the bnb hire.

Difficult as not everyone would need it so unfair if the rental charge increased for everyone
The app sounds good though

Well if you have an electric car you need to charge it. Why not say there is an extra charge of x?

Summerunlover · 17/06/2026 01:24

That’s so cheeky. We just got an ev and are staying in an air BnB in August and would never use there electric for that.
