Driving test nerves

My driving test is this week. I need hints, tips and tried and tested ways to really help me to pass.

I’ve had lots of lessons, broadly know my possible test routes and am a competent driver but make silly mistakes at times in my lessons due to nerves.

I have my own car and am practising constantly but I tend to fall apart when I’m being critiqued and watched. Any and all advice welcome. I really, really want to pass.

DS used rescue remedy to calm his nerves before he took his test
passed first time
good luck 🤞

Couple of pints to calm the nerves?

Joking aside, it's not a nice experience so can sympathise and sending lots of luck. I remember doing mine 20+ years ago and took it in stride, now would be different as I overthink everything. My only advice would be to stay calm and remember that if the worst happens you can just rebook

Think that you’re acting. You are acting the part of an extremely competent driver in a film that for some reason has to have a driving test.

(For my own driving test I absolutely convinced myself that I had failed in the first five minutes as I took what felt like about half an hour to get out of the car park as it was busy 🤣. Massive stress reduction as I thought I had already failed, ended up getting no minors or majors whatsoever! You’ve got this 💪

Had a terrible lesson today. Just get so in my head. Would be super handy if one could have a couple of gins before a driving test.

I was on betablockers when I passed, 4th attempt.

Make sure you talk through everything, give a running commentary, leave no room for misinterpretation. “Checking left mirror then turning into lane…” “Preparing to move off.” “Entering left lane for traffic to Rainbow Road.” Etc. You’ll sound nuts but it’ll be harder for them to claim you didn’t do xyz. I had a great examiner but you never know who you’ll get.

Also have a banana, I dunno if it’s just a placebo or not. And pray for traffic.

I had beta blockers and passed on my third time. Also tied my hair back and exaggerated my observations!!

abathofmilkwithladydi · 16/06/2026 19:22

It’s too late for beta blockers for me. I’ll have a banana and maybe some kalms. What will be will be I guess but I really want to pass and have some life changes coming up that mean it’s more important than ever that I can do this. The problem I have is I put a huge amount of pressure on myself to succeed which means when I don’t, I fall apart. Urgh.

You can do this 👍

I took a beta blocker, propranolol. I asked my dr for it, I took it throughout uni for talks etc.
