How can my granddaughter claim Child Trust money without an NI number?

My DGD was born in Oxford, the family left when she was two and have since lived in different countries. Her parents have mislaid all her papers, she lives in the EU now. She hears that everyone can claim this money but she has no papers. Can any one suggest how she can go about this claim with no NI number.

She just needs to phone up and get her NI number

Edited

Although she did study for a year when she finished high school in the EU she has never worked in the UK.

You don’t need to work to have a NI number and you don’t need to work to claim the money which is in her name
Many kids use it for Uni
mine did

Are you sure she has a CTF? How old is she? Were her parents receiving child benefit? If she does not have an NI number she can apply via a paper form for her CTF. It won’t be worth a lot - anywhere from £500-£2000 (if she’s from a lower income family and the government doubled their contribution snd it was put in a S&S fund).

My British born DC were not living in UK when they turned 16. They’ve never worked in UK. They had to phone the number a PP has provided and get a NI number. Once they have that it’s straight forward.

dementedpixie · 15/06/2026 17:35

She would have been allocated a NI number already if she had a CTF. The unique reference number on the CTF is the same as the NI number. She needs to find out the NI number and then trace the CTF provider

I have been told that she has to be living in the UK.

I have been told that she has to be living in the UK.

As long as she was born here between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011 she will have a CTF. She simply needs to ring the number given above and get her NI number, then use that to track down her fund provider via the HMRC.

No you don’t

‘You do not need to live in the UK to access your Child Trust Fund (CTF) money.
You must meet the residency requirements to initially qualify for the account (born in the UK between Sept 1, 2002, and Jan 2, 2011, and not subject to immigration controls). However, moving abroad does not cancel your fund or prevent you from accessing it. 1, 2, 3]

The person I was talking to you asking how to apply for a NI number.

The person I was talking to you asking how to apply for a NI number.

They were wrong.
just get the NI number
You don’t have to tell anyone why you want it
Its your dcs number so they have to give it to her

Then once you have it you can find out who holds your dcs funds.
Then you contact them and they give your dc the money.

Thats it
No long explanations or anything needed

Its your dcs money sitting in an account somewhere waiting for your dc to access it

Than you everyone. We will try again, I’ll come come back if we have no success for more ideas.

In the old days NI numbers were not issued until you reached your teens but this led to issues with duplicate NiNo's

They are now issued not long after birth so there should be one
