How long can you go without a drink (water)?

Got a new colleague who is really struggling with our rules at work. No water/drinks at desks
She is really unhappy about it and keeps going out for a drink, I’ve said you do get used to it but I’m not sure if she will!
curious if others would struggle. It’s 2hrs max between breaks

I had a cup of tea at home, then a cup of tea made by a colleague at 10am, it was a shit cup so only drunk half and I had a cup of tea around 5pm at home. I won't have anything else to drink, unless you class a gulp of water when taking a tablet as a drink, until tomorrow morning. I know I don't drink enough but it's from a previous job where going to the toilet too often was frowned upon.

Don't be ridiculous, it's not 'dangerous' to not have a drink for 2 hours while doing office work.

People will be absolutely fine all day if they had to, not that they do because they have breaks every 2 hours.

They probably banned water bottles because they were sick of the sight of people glugging away at them like babies with sippy cups. A PP calling them 'emotional support water bottles' is spot on.

People drinking water doesn’t actually affect you. Why don’t you grow up.

Leopardspota · 15/06/2026 19:52

Is she young? Kids at school are so used to having bottles that they Behave like they might die when they don’t have immediate access to a water bottle.

Overworkedandknackered · 15/06/2026 19:56

I can probably go 4-6 hours without a drink before I’d notice, the first time I went to a theme park and got one of those ‘free refill’ cups and I was topping it up all day to get my money’s worth was the first time I realised I’ve spent most of my life dehydrated 🤣

Mid thirties?

I’d struggle with this I’m constantly drinking water all day. Xx

Anarchy99 · 15/06/2026 20:02

Some people seemingly can’t last without a constant stream of water flowing down their gullet

3 litres, regardless of when you drink it, would mean you'd need a loo pretty often. 3 litres is madness.

Your body adjusts.

Caterina99 · 15/06/2026 20:18

I’d be fine, but it would be weird to adjust to. I drink tons of tea and water at my desk! I suppose I’d just have to take longer breaks instead.

You’d think a compromise would be to allow no spill bottles of water and nothing else. But then if your access isn’t actually restricted and you can go get a drink any time then that doesn’t seem necessary.

I can easily go several hours. I don’t think this rule is unreasonable. We seem to have become used to drinking more frequently that we used to. Years ago we didn’t all carry water bottles around everywhere like so many people do now. I think it’s what we have got used to rather than what we actually need.

Edited

I only take a bottle of water with me if it is a really hot day, around 30 degrees +.

hexsnidgett · 15/06/2026 20:38

I would love it. I never get to have tea breaks anymore and am just supposed to constantly sip.

Oh we get proper breaks, tea is free and breaks are all paid. Everyone takes them

Sign me up! I have to bring my own drinks and only get a lunch break and that's it.

Honeyhonay · 15/06/2026 20:42

Probably 10 hours or more, I typically force myself to have a water, sparkling water or tea but I very rarely ever feel thirsty.

I would hate to be told no drinks at my desk though, so unnecessarily authoritarian.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 15/06/2026 20:44

Just adding… we go 7-9hours without a drink at night. Two hours really shouldn’t be a trauma if we are generally hydrated and have access to a drink at that point.

DelilahBucket · 15/06/2026 20:45

I couldn't go two hours without a drink, but I tend to sip all day. One of my members of staff, her old job she wasn't allowed drinks and there was no break on a five hour shift. No toilet break either. I'm pretty sure that's bordering on illegal. She was amazed when I said I have a break on a four hour shift and I encourage staying hydrated by keeping water bottles on hand.

In my workplace I’m told I can’t drink (science lab) and I get daily migraine because of it. Several staff are now saying no - and insisting we can drink out of water bottles. I’m sticking to the rules but it’s ridiculous frankly -

I remember life before the emotional support water bottle (just about).

2hrs is very doable, especially if you actually can go and get a drink in between.

Yes it's all a bit ridiculous isn't it?

Glazerblazer · 15/06/2026 21:06

I would need a drink if I was talking but if not then no.

And the reason I can go about 12 hours is that I’m also from the pre-water bottle generation. When I went to school the only option was room temperature water from a metal jug at lunchtime so generally had my first drink after school.

Me too, but this is why I take a water bottle everywhere. I have such horrible memories of being SO thirsty at school. I recall a particularly hot day in the early 90s of my class queueing up at the class water fountain with the teacher stood at the fountain, counting to five as each child had their turn. 5 seconds of water!

mumumental · 15/06/2026 21:36

Two hours wouldn’t be a problem. All morning possibly.

narcASD · 15/06/2026 21:39

Kids don't have access to water at primary unless at break & lunch, if a 5yo can manage I'm sure an adult can.

I can go a few hours, longer in winter, constant desk slurping irritates me

Wednesdaysotherchild · 15/06/2026 21:45

I couldn’t deal with that - I need to drink quite frequently - history of migraines triggered by dehydration, breastfeeding and hot flushes and I’m a thirsty woman!

CaffeinatedMum · 15/06/2026 21:48

I would really struggle to go two hours without regularly! I like to sip water throughout the day.
