Cost of butchers meat

I've just paid £27.50 for 783g of braising steak and 644g of chicken fillets from the local butcher…that’s 2 meals worth of meat without any other ingredients. I know the quality of meat will be much better than supermarket meat, but I am still surprised it’s so expensive. Especially given that braising steak is a traditionally cheap cut of meat.

It sounds like you’ve shopped at quite an expensive butcher. Our local butcher at the farm shop can be cheaper than Tesco.

thats just a local village butcher, nothing fancy.

There seems to be less variation on prices between supermarket and butchers (other than steak cuts like fillet, sirloin, rump and ribeye)

Beef is silly money these days. I've not found any cuts for less than £15 per kg. Ox cheek, shin, chuck and topside are the cheapest but still lots of money. Minced beef seems to have gotten a little cheaper than earlier in the year but is still pricey.

Best value for chicken seems to be the whole leg (drumstick plus thigh). Or bone in thighs.

Same here. Our local farm shop undercuts all of our local supermarkets and, in quality, beats the traditional family butchers shop in the town.

I found that by the time you've chopped out the gristley bits that it's not a dissimilar price BUT tastes so much better

We like to support our local independent butcher. Sometimes the prices are alarming, but it’s worth it. Meat should be expensive if it’s higher welfare.

I don’t find the local butcher much more expensive, and the difference is quality is seismic. The meat also doesn’t half in size as it cooks.

TonTonMacoute · 15/06/2026 18:02

I'm always amazed that meat I get from our butcher isn't more expensive than it is. Some is more expensive certainly but a lot of it is price comparable, but the quality and nutritional value of the meat is so much better.

We now get our meat from a mobile butcher who parks his lorry up a couple of times a week in the car park of our local rugby club. It's the cheapest around.
