Today’s Social Media Ban Announcement: Discussion

I haven’t seen a thread for today’s expected ban on social media for Under 16s so thought I’d start one. If there already is one pls link and I’ll get this deleted.

What will it likely include?
What won’t it include?
How do you and your kids feel about it, especially if they’re already using it?
Will you follow it, and when?
Will people try to get round it?

Thank you. So, how does banning YouTube for under-16s actually protect teens in that case? Will they not just be able to watch as guests instead?

This is a genuine question by the way, for anyone who might be able to answer. I'm trying to understand the rationale. Are the algorithms different for guest viewers or something?

I think they will mandate internet access via digital ID. For all, not for under 16s.
No vpn will solve this and there won't be guest access fairly soon, otherwise the ban would be impossible to implement and police.

I quoted the BBC. Your beef is with them not me.

But you didn’t, the bbc article you linked literally said
“The ban will cover platforms including Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X, the government said.
A complete list of which platforms the ban will apply to has not been released.”

Which is not what your comment said, not sure why you keep trying to justify it.

Personally, I wouldn't have an issue with this, but I know that some people would really hate it.

The issue is your internet access is then monitored and controlled by the state - a bit like in China. It should be clear how dangerous and authoritarian that is.

At least we can still vote a party out. If they go too China.

Well, it's Big Brother, isn't it? God forbid someone would listen to Farage on youtube!

Can't help listening to Back in USSR in my head... just a coincidence 😏

Honestly, I don't really care. I don't suppose that the state will be particularly interested in my browsing habits, but I have never worked on the assumption that my Internet use was really private anyway.

BrookStreamRiverlet · 15/06/2026 14:29

It seems to have been forgotten that today’s teens were pushed onto screens by government. We were very limited with internet use right up until March 2020….

Parties do not matter anymore.

Does that apply to any gov knowing? Eg if the next one was Reform / Restore set up?

You don’t care if the government control what news you receive? What opinions you are allowed to express?

I have family in China. This is harsher believe me.

This poster tells us the UK social media policy is worse than China.

This is horrific

I guess I've always assumed that the Internet had a big brother quality to it anyway.

You think Restore will be worse than Labour?

Restore is all about Freedom and Liberty.

They will repeal this if they can.

100% this.
And the populace will also be controlled via their children. Perfect scheme, can't escape.

I’m not really commenting on that. Wondering if pp is sanguine because they like Starmer and Labour. So they’re fine with that level of control and access.

Internet is never private but corporations do not have legal power to send you to prison for whatever they see fit at some point.

Specific online schooling platforms have nothing to do with the number of parents who allow their children so much unvetted access to things like YouTube, TikTok or Snapchat.
Its simply nonsense to suggest the government pushed teens onto social media, which is what the ban is targeting.

As I've repeatedly told you, I'm no great fan of Starmer, and I'm also aware that the Labour Party won't be in power forever, so no, it has nothing to do with that.

Rightly or wrongly, I am not particularly worried about any of the mainstream parties misusing our data. And if we end up with the kind of far right government that might be more inclined to abuse their powers, then I wouldn't be planning on sticking around in this country in any case.

And the see fit part is changeable depending on who is in power.

Exactly so. And depending on the ever changing wider context.

I don’t trust Labour with this.
