I wish I was good at...

Art!

My own family are really good at it.
I married an arty man, whose family are all arty.
And now our DCs are quite artistically talented too.
I'm the exception! 😆

What do you wish you was good at?

Singing. My mother had a lovely voice. My DH had a good one too, as does my son. My DD has an ok voice. But my singing would make your ears bleed. I’d love to be able to sing.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 18/06/2026 19:37

@NorthernLiner Art and music run in my family, too, but we are supposed to ignore that in favour of sport! I beg to differ, and have bought my niece and nephew all kinds of arty things to experiment with. Surprisingly, I was not banned from doing so (that went to the person who bought them glitter, which ended up in the nice new carpets...) 😂

Playing an instrument. I've never learnt, no idea if I could. I covet Playing electric guitar.

Shinyhappyapple · 18/06/2026 20:24

Self motivation.

I retired a couple of years ago and I’ve discovered that unless I have actual plans which involve someone else, then I just sit and read my book. I do actually make lots of arrangements to meet people and go to a weekly class but if I think to myself ‘I may go swimming tomorrow’, I never do.

I would also like to be able to sing in tune and park a car without a space the size of a bus.

As I'm reading the entire thread ( up to now ) in my head I'm saying yes to all of them !
Never really thought about it before , but I'm rubbish at most things and many I can't do at all !

SoMuchToBits · 18/06/2026 20:39

I wish I was good at driving, but tried to learn when I was in my 20s and despite numerous lessons, was just hopeless, and had to give it up as a bad job. Similarly rubbish at all sports. Can't run fast, can't judge distances well, so catching/hitting a ball is a nightmare. The only type of exercise I've ever been good at is Scottish country dancing.

But I can play the clarinet reasonably well (not great at singing) and recently discovered I'm not bad at (some forms of) art. I used to draw and paint a lot as a child, but never followed it up at secondary school. But about 3 years ago I joined a coloured pencil art class and surprised myself with what I've been able to achieve!

I wish I was good at being creative.

I'm skilled at making / crafting things but only when I'm following steps / guides / techniques. My finished pieces look neat and tidy and well finished, but I made someone else's design. E.g my cross stitch or crochet will turn out perfect but I followed a pattern to make it. I can play a song on the guitar perfectly, but it's someone else's song.

I wish I could do the imagining something up from scratch bit and not just applying my labour to someone else's creativity to make a copy. I have a wide range of hobbies I've built up my skills in but every time I sit down with a blank page to build something from scratch I stare at it for hours and never get anywhere. I just don't seem to have original ideas.

SoMuchToBits · 18/06/2026 20:59

@DoAWheelie I get that! I can play music that someone else has written. I can draw something which is in front of me. I can follow a pattern to sew something (so long as it's relatively simple). But I couldn't make up any of those things!

The only thing I have managed to be a bit creative with is making scenes out of Playmobil. I post them on here sometimes. I get ideas from real life scenarios, but sometimes the stories just take off anyway!

Allseeingallknowing · 18/06/2026 21:04

Some of these retirement ideas sound exhausting! Reading and watching tv after a long lay in sounds very appealing!

Nofeckingway · 18/06/2026 21:08

Swimming
Playing an instrument or sing
Running or anything sporty
Gardening
Languages
Any one of the above would do

Think I am like an throwback that can read and write and arrange flowers . Get me a husband in Victorian times .

Swimming - can do a plodding backstroke. That's it.
Instrument yes, singing not really.
Running or anything sporty just no!
Gardening a little bit, so long as the plants are pretty much indestructible.
Languages, did ok at O level French, can still remember a bit. Anything I have tried to learn as an adult, not so much. I can remember a lot of the vocabulary, but not how to put it together.

Reading, yes.
Writing, can write anything it will be great for spelling, punctuation, grammar etc. But will have no ideas for content!
Arranging flowers - I'd just shove them in a vase... Blush

upinaballoon · 18/06/2026 21:41

Putting mascara on.
Sawing wood and knocking in nails and staples.
Understanding what happens under a car bonnet.
Games.

Gosh those are great! The hydrangea in particular

RedPanda2022 · 18/06/2026 21:53

Being good at anything would be fab.
playing the piano or learning languages… I never seem to improve past a very basic level at these

SoMuchToBits · 18/06/2026 21:54

Thanks @Goodmorningeveryone26 ! When I first started the class I thought I was going to be rubbish, as most people had been going for a while and knew what they were doing already! But the tutor is good, so I picked the technique up eventually. The hydrangea is probably one of the best things I've done so far.
