What big change of direction should Labour take from here?

Just watching BBC Laura K and it's very clear that the entire parliamentary Labour Party is geared up for a full-on Labour leadership battle in the next few weeks. It's not clear if it will be June, July, August or September, but it will be one of those months. Perhaps more importantly, it's also not remotely clear what direction they want the government to go in.

What’s striking is how conflicting the priorities are among Labour MPs. Some are openly pushing for lower taxation, others are demanding higher defence spending, quite a few want proper controls on immigration, some are calling for lower welfare spending and others want to dial back on Net Zero costs. But then you’ve got plenty on the other side who want the complete opposite - higher taxes, less on defence and much more spending on public services.

Genuine question: if you could pick the big change of direction for this government, what would it be? Interested to hear what others think - especially those who voted Labour last time.

Scrap FPTP, introduce PR and call an election.

No other plan works.

They won't do it, of course.

I agree about PR. Well under 50% of voters support right wing parties, and plenty of countries have managed ok or better with coalition governments.

You can even choose a PR system such as in the Irish Republic that allows for voters to choose one person from a party instead of another. I think you'd get a wider age range of politicians, no safe seats and more women as a result.

In the mean time, one thing I would like is a modern Consumer Act to stop the level of hidden charges and rip-offs.

My problem with PR is that an awful lot of cranks from Reform, Lib Dems, Greens and Plaid Cymru would become MPs.

Having said that, we got a lot of Tory MP cranks in 2019 and have got a load of Labour and SNP ones now, so maybe it would just be better to reduce the number of MPs we've got? I've never understood why we need 650 MPs when it's councils that represent local areas, and there are so many other layers of government anyway (ie mayors, the Welsh Assembly, regional authorities etc).
