Lone parent hobbies

I need to find a hobby to stop feeling so bored and lonely in the evenings, something at home only. I don’t watch tv or anything like that so no suggestions of a series to watch not really into books either. I find myself just doom scrolling, lone parent so 10 years sat in every night alone is starting to take its toll, it gets very boring. What other hobbies do lone parents do I the evening to make it easier?

I have been getting into Rolife as I was having the same issue. Highly recommend! I am doing one now!

I recently got back into an old hobby of mine: knitting. I love it and I wish I cared less about peoples opinions when I was younger.

Do you want to do something with a creative purpose, or just something to keep your hands/mind busy?

Top suggestions that don't cost much to get started on...

Knitting
Crochet
Sewing of some sort - cross stitch or hand embroidery? Sweary cross stitch looks like loads of fun 🤣
Colouring books
Jigsaws
Collage

You say you don't watch TV but might you enjoy listening to audiobooks or podcasts? I often sit and sew while listening to something.

Just to pass time, I don’t watch tv or read books.

Yoga? There’s a lot of good YouTube tutorials.

I crochet sometimes, self-taught from YouTube.

I really can’t understand the no interest in TV though.. is there really nothing that would interest you in the entirety of TV?

CandiCanes · 13/06/2026 22:42

Thanks for the suggestions so far

I can’t imagine not having a TV (also a single parent) watching a film or series definitely helps when you’re on lockdown every evening for years.

CandiCanes · 13/06/2026 23:03

Yes well we are all different, I’ve never been into tv only had them for the kids. Im looking for something other than tv i only mentioned it so people didnt suggest a series or film.

Baking.

Learning a language on something like DuoLingo.
I recently made some silk painting greeting cards (bought a kit) and they were really easy and looked great.

Online exercise classes - tai chi, yoga and pilates maybe more suitable for a smaller area.

I find puzzle books addictive and am considering having a go at making a scarf myself. Puzzle books, you can get some that are just wordsearches/crosswords, others a real mix. Do you think you could get into drawing/painting?

Build a dolls house?

I have a dolls house (I had a replied my house made) and it’s a very good time filler. I didn’t mention it earlier as I thought posters would find it weird.

I went into abstract art from nothing. There are so many fun techniques out there to try. You won’t get bored once you start it. Let us know 😃

Ooh, I’d love that! I plan to do that when I eventually get time.
