Carpet Advice - what do I ask for?

Want a grey carpet in my bedroom. Not sure what to look or ask for. My requirements:

Most of it will be covered by our bed so seems pointless having a hugely expensive one wool one.

As its a bedroom something softish on the foot. Not hard or harsh

Nothing fancy, no pattern or texture, just plain

Dont like those ones that as soon as you stand on it or hoover it, it marks and goes 2 tone if you know what I mean!

Want to go looking, but not sure what Im looking for!

We recently got something similar for our loft. Synthetic - because we have had carpet kiths before and not going there again! And it’s easily cleanable. Doesn’t make stripes when hoovered!

It was this one if I remember correctly…

Just go into a carpet shop and feel them / stroke the rolls of carpet with your hand.
If a salesperson approaches you tell them what you have told us.
Or, I suppose, tell them you are just browsing if you are happy to wander about yourself.

It does make a big difference to get quality underlay - that is what gives you the sort of 'bounce' that is nice on a carpet.

Once you’ve had a look go to Designer Carpets online, they have room sized remnants that are a fraction of the cost in stores. I’ve recarpeted in 80/20 wool mix for much less than synthetic in stores. The carpets look and feel luxurious, they’ll send samples etc and their service is really good - someone here recommended them on another thread.

@Jellycatspyjamas thanks will take a look. They just supply carpet not fitting?

They do just supply, they also do underlay, I got a local fitter, cost about £150 to lift the old carpet and fit the new one.

Second that re underlay, get the best you can afford, it makes a difference xx

Sunnysidegold · 14/06/2026 07:36

Aw I know what you mean about the stripes.

I went to buy bedroom carpet and the man in the shop was trying to give me the basic one and I said I could afford something a little nicer underfoot and I ended up with a deep pile carpet that needs hoovering ever two minutes.

Thanks for the recommend on that website!

purpledagger · 14/06/2026 07:59

i’d recommend trying an independent carpet shop. We have a few locally and they have been much cheaper than places like carpet right.

Agree about the underlay as well - just make sure it can fit under any doors!!

ive found the best carpet pattern is slightly speckled like the one posted in this thread, as it hides marks etc. Years ago, my Mum bought a flat colour carpet and it literally showed up the tiniest bits of fluff so we were constantly having to vacuum.

Get one with a short tight pile
long pile flatten
