How different did your child find the move from Reception to Year 1?

Hello

My DS is reaching the end of Reception and I wondered how different year 1 is. I appreciate each child is different but would love to hear your experience.

He got off to a rocky start with a bit of unkindness from others but has now made some lovely friends and is confident with other children.

They've mentioned his concentration waivered a bit, especially on carpet time and the possibility of ADHD but this hasn't been taken any further.

I understand year 1 has more learning which I think is great but do think he may struggle. We often do the learning books together at home but this is a bi ad hoc. Wondering if I could get into a better routine with these?

He's a social boy, loves to play and very active. Just wanted to hear your opinions.

I think it depends on the teacher. My eldest really struggled in the first term of year one despite being the brighter of my two children and constantly complained about not being able to play. My second had no issues at all. Her teacher continued to incorporate play and slowly introduced more and more learning.

That's a good point. DS current teacher is fresh out of university so it's her first teaching job. You can see the keenness and enthusiasm which I find refreshing.

DS was youngest in year and, like the PP, he struggled with less play.

I wouldn’t read anything into lack of concentration at carpet time unless there are other issues. The teachers are used to helping with the transition and have all sorts of tricks up their sleeve like fidget cushions, egg timers etc.

DS couldn’t sit still for more than 10 mins when he started year 1 and left as the model pupil.

Biggest jump for him was increased writing. If you can get your child ready to face that, and to push reading for enjoyment with you over the summer hols, then they’ll be ready to go!

Absolutely fine, less crying at drop off for both of them.

It was a big jump for DD, which she still talks about. And she is bright (heading for 8s and 9s bright), old for her year, and reasonably able to concentrate. I really hope schools are making it a smoother transition now. However it's very unlikely that your DS will be the only one to find it hard if there is something of a step change.

Thank you. We read two books each night but we need to move towards DS reading more and we will also continue to read to him before bed.

Writing is a good one. I will start doing more of this but make it fun.

The more I research ADHD, the more I do possibly see traits in DS and if I'm honest, myself.

He is such a wonderful boy so I just want to do all I can to help the transition.

Mine preferred year 1 as it’s more structured. Think she found all the playing time a bit overwhelming and anxiety inducing as she spent a lot of time alone. Got lots of friends now, but she’s very happy to entertain herself as well!
