Do you know the phrase on the huh and where are you from?

I was recently having a conversation with a group of people, and one of them mentioned that something in the room was "on the huh". About half of us knew what she meant and the other half were completely baffled. I was surprised as I assumed it was a fairly widespread expression, but it seems that it is actually quite localised.

So, do you know what it means and which part of the UK are you from?

What does this mean?

Basically how are you, with an endearment.

"Ow bist" is I believe a survival from "How be'est thou?"

Sometimesthere · 12/06/2026 22:24

Yes, from Norfolk

NoodleHorses · 12/06/2026 22:26

It’s a Norfolkism. I had a shelf that was on the huh. I fixed it.
The shelf is by the Winda and the Bishies sit on it.

Madeinsuffolk · 12/06/2026 23:12

Per my username, I know exactly what it means. Also find people confused if i say ‘I’m on the drag’.

Means running late!

Madeinsuffolk · 12/06/2026 23:14

Not heard this in ages. Thank you. Moved from Suffolk over 20 years ago.

Yerdug · 12/06/2026 23:20

Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis?
I'm northern. Like proper northern.

Laurmolonlabe · 12/06/2026 23:40

Probably on the east bof the country- I've lived all along the west , including the south west and I've never heard of it.

SqueakyDinosaur · 12/06/2026 23:54

Another one that I've only ever heard in Norfolk (my mum grew up there & lives there, so though I've never lived there I've spent a lot of time there): she has a gardener who's in his 70s, has lived within 5 miles of his current house his entire life. I absolutely love listening to him - strong Norfolk accent.

I made him a cup of very strong tea, and he took his first mouthful of it and declared, "That'd put life in a wooden doll!" which must surely be pre-1900, and possibly much earlier - anyone else encountered this?

And because of my mum, I only knew ladybirds as bishy-barnybees until I went to school, even though we lived in the West Midlands...

Be loads of phrases that are unique to certain areas all over the UK.

Sadcafe · 13/06/2026 09:09

North east now, midlands and Yorkshire too, never heard of it. Colloquilisms are really interesting, Nesh was a common one from where I was born, never hear it outside the midlands

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2026 09:13

Outer SW London, never heard it. What does it mean?

Wonky. Norfolk/Suffolk word.

Minidollop · 13/06/2026 09:54

Yes, from Suffolk.

Mh67 · 13/06/2026 12:21

Glasgow Scotland and never heard it

Tiredhotmess · 13/06/2026 15:30

I'm from Essex and have never heard that expression in my life before! Haven't a clue what it means 🤷‍♀️

Tiredhotmess · 13/06/2026 15:33

AnnaQuayRules · 12/06/2026 12:47

For those outside Suffolk/Norfolk, it means wonky. So you might say "that picture is on the huh" if it's not hung straight.

I find regional dialect fascinating. I hadn't realised it was an East Anglian only phrase

In Essex we'd say 'on the wonk' which means the same thing.

Ifeelbetterwhenimdancing · 13/06/2026 17:53

Yes, Suffolk here
