Labyrinthitis? How long?

Posting in chat for traffic.

I posted in late April about inner ear problems, and they're still ongoing. My MRI was clear, the ENT consultant said it was probably the aftermath of labyrinthitis. My dizziness has almost gone, but still really nauseous everyday and loud tinnitus. For anyone who's had labyrinthitis or similar, how long did your symptoms last?

My mum
had it for months. Unfortunately

AnneShirleysNewDress · 11/06/2026 10:42

I had it last January. I still get dizziness now and then but the tinnitus hasn’t gone away. The nausea stopped within a few weeks for me.

Cioccoholic · 11/06/2026 10:45

Mine last three weeks, although the early vomiting stage was only a week.

I still get nauseous when I lie completely flat on my back (months later), it is a very weird and uncomfortable feeling.

Have you tried physiotherapy?

I swim most days a week though so hard to tell what’s the root cause!

I do VRT exercises, the ENT gave me printed sheets. Like I say the dizziness has gone which I think the exercises are aimed at. It's the nausea that's mostly troubling me.

I had it about 10 years ago, couldn’t walk in a straight line, falling over all the time and had to stop driving because I didn’t feel safe. My GP did the Epley manoeuvre on me and it fixed it! Has your GP mentioned that at all?

ETA I had BPPV after labyrinthitis so the Epley is only to treat the BPPV, not labyrinthitis.

HoppingPavlova · 11/06/2026 11:33

Have they considered Menieres?

OneSnugBear · 11/06/2026 14:50

They said Menieres isn't constant unlike labyrinthiti.also Menieres would be visible on an MRI scan. My GP hasn't mentioned the Epley manoeuvre.

Had it 3 weeks vomiting and falling all over the place Even after when walking the dog I think the village thought I was drunk as I staggered now and again.

Choconuttolata · 11/06/2026 20:22

Months but I also had BPPV and vestibular neuritis. I saw a vestibular therapist after 8 weeks. Every time I caught a virus it set it off again.

Apprenante · 11/06/2026 20:28

I don't think Menières is visible on an MRI scan. Agreed it's not constant though - thank goodness. Maybe ask for the medication thats used for Menières and just see if it helps?

Mullaghanish · 11/06/2026 22:24

virus’s can trigger me on it but GP gave me acyclovir antivirals and it’s gone after 3 days now..

HoppingPavlova · 13/06/2026 00:20

Menieres would be visible on an MRI scan

If they told you that, I’d see someone else, as that’s definitely not the case.

OneSnugBear · 13/06/2026 07:05

Thanks for your replies. I don't think its Menieres as the dizziness has almost gone, and I think vertigo is really bad if you do have it. Just stuck with the nausea and tinnitus, but this could apparently be months like a previous poster said?
