We are complete bbq novices. Never had a garden before. There will be 4 meat eaters and two veggies. What would you get and how much? I appreciate this may seem ridiculous but I've never hosted a bbq before. Any tips, suggestions most welcomed.

Depends on what you all like to eat. Do you have one or two bbqs? I don’t like to cook vegetarian food on the same bbq as the meat one, so we have a separate bbq for vegetarian food so everyone can eat at the same time. For six people I would do one thick cut large steak (500g), 10 marinated chicken thighs (harissa is nice as easy), 20 large prawns, circular sausage ring, 8 halloumi skewers, 8 garlic mushroom skewers, 4 vegetarian kebabs (I use roasted veg, herbs and spices, feta, and a binding agent like breadcrumbs), large salad with peppers, tomatoes, pomegranate, cucumber, etc.

Is your BBQ charcoal or gas? If it is charcoal, light it way before you think you need to. Most people finish cooking just as the BBQ gets to the right temperature to start cooking. Keep coals up one end so you have a hot spot and a cooler spot. Cook meats for a longer time in the cooler end. Low and slow. Chicken I would do in the oven and then finish off on the BBQ to get the flavour but make sure it is cooked through.

A meat thermometer is your friend.

Gas BBQs are easier. Much more controllable.

Corn on the cob with butter rubbed in and wrapped in tin foil is good.
