I've had two- one under sedation and one local. Sedation was much nicer! Didn't know a thing about any of it.

redboxer321 · 10/06/2026 09:25

Local. Not a particularly enjoyable experience but nothing too terrible. The relief of getting that fucker out was immense! Had an abscess there previously which was the worst pain I have ever felt.

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 10/06/2026 09:26

Had one with local. I wasn't offered anything else! It was a very difficult extraction but I managed although it was unpleasant.

Yes me! 🙋🏼‍♀️ Had all four out at the same time. It was in hospital and I was given a general anaesthetic - it was fine. Sore afterwards and had hamsterface. Couldn’t open my mouth more than a centimetre for a while so food had to be kind of posted through the slot like a letterbox.
Where the teeth are impacted, they obviously have to cut into the gums, but also have to drill into the bone to loosen the root. And wisdom teeth are BIG. Absolutely no way I was going to be conscious while this happened.
Caveat - this was 1997 and they might have whizzier ways of doing it now.

Jennalong · 10/06/2026 09:27

It depend on the impaction . I've had friends that had local but I was advised a hospital appointment with a general .
It was years ago now but can't remember any complications .
Go with your dentists recommendations .

Eeyorefan · 10/06/2026 09:28

Sedated, but I had all four out at once. Wouldn’t recommend having it done in winter - opening your mouth and having all four wounds hit with cold air is painful!

Edited

Almost identical experience here.

It was fairly brutal and I had to have a week off work, but was well worth it long term to avoid the infections etc.

pambeesleyhalpert · 10/06/2026 09:28

Are they upper or lower? Uppers are much easier than lower.

Octavia64 · 10/06/2026 09:29

Yes

local

not pleasant but better than infections

Hotdoughnut · 10/06/2026 09:29

Local, I'll be honest it was very unpleasant. Although I didn't have any pain in my wisdom tooth so for me it was preventative work. I think if you're in a lot of pain it would seem more worthwhile!

thecuree · 10/06/2026 09:30

I’ve been referred to a private type clinic and they offer sedation, I’ve had 4 operations before so shouldn’t be nervous but I am because of the amount of pain I’m in atm! Only had 1 wisdom tooth come through before, also lower and that gave me an abscess and a swollen face, it eventually manage to come through. What are the chances of the top ones trying it too?! I’m 36!

Yes me. Lower wisdom tooth.

I had to have a week off work and the only thing that helped was arnica spray to my jaw. But much better now.
it was under local anaesthetic and pretty quick

SparklyGlitterballs · 10/06/2026 09:32

My DD had all four out. Two were growing in sideways, literally. She had a local and was "away with the fairies". Doesn't remember a thing about the actual procedure.

thecuree · 10/06/2026 09:33

The first pic was the other day and the second is this morning, the gum has swollen over the hole and I have so much pain

On your question at 36 what’s the chance of them coming through?
im 57 and have no wisdom teeth came through asked my dentist the same question and got the answer I didn’t want, seems they can come through at any time.!!

ghostyslovesheets · 10/06/2026 09:38

One with local - sorry but for me it was dreadful, the other 3 under general!

littleburn · 10/06/2026 09:54

I’ve had both lower wisdom teeth removed at different times, as they were partially erupted - just breaking through the gum but at an angle and causing infection. Both just with a local injection.

The first time at a dental hospital and it took 45 minutes to get out, ended up being drilled out, and I ended up with an incredibly painful infection and hamster face for a week. The second was at a private dental clinic (being used to provide NHS services) and it was pulled out in a couple of minutes with no issues after. Like night and day basically!

I may have just been unlucky with the first and lucky with the second, but I think if it’s a complex extraction you’d be better off with sedation, as they can do what they need to do to get it out quickly and minimise the infection risk.

Well, this is worrying 😭😆

I’ve had two out, one with local which was fine but I did develop dry socket which was appalling and pure agony.

Second was with general as it was complex. I had to have a week off work afterwards.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Mine sounds the same as yours, I believe it’s called a mesial impaction, on the xray it’s pointing towards my back molar rather than sitting straight. I suspect this is what was wrong with my other lower wisdom all those years ago. I have a small mouth apparently, did you struggle keeping your mouth open wide for so long?!

Dry socket scares me, why is it so painful?

Years ago. Top ones had come through, bottom ones kept breaking through the gum, getting infected, food trapped, cleaning a nightmare, abx, settle, start again.
I had a hospital referral as near to nerve so risk of damage.
I was relieved they decided to use a local as the thought of general didn't appeal . I don't think sedation was offered.
I did feel the pushing and pulling but after the aggravation they caused me I was glad to ge5 rid. Healed up nicely

BillieWiper · 10/06/2026 10:18

I've never known someone to have a general for tooth extraction. Maybe some benzos if you're lucky and injections.

It varies a lot. Some people they need to cut it out which is obviously a bit more longer to heal. They may do this in a dental hospital. But many just pop out quite easily within a minute at the regular dentists office. But it won't actually hurt at the time. You just feel pulling or pressure.

Use saltwater rinse for a few days and it should be grand.

Thanks. Mine is still under the gum so they have to cut the gum to reach it

My dd had all four impacted wisdom teeth out recently - under local -took just under an hour and was full on but pain free and done very well. I had all mine out in the 1990s under a general in hospital. Much worse I think.
