Windows smashed for the second time & police can’t do anything despite cctv footage

Back in January my partner, my 4year old son & I were watching television in the living room around 5 in the evening when we heard a huge bang coming from the window, as my partner went to inspect the sound our window had been smashed & there were two young adult males dressed in all black with masks & gloves on holding house bricks in hand standing under our window (we live in a 2 story flat & we are on the top level), they went on to throw another two house bricks trying to completely shatter the window before fleeing, I took our son into the hallway away from any windows & began calling the police then called my dad as he lived close by & I knew he’d get there before the police would. My parents arrive & I asked them to take our son back to their’s to keep him safe & to avoid further frightening him. Once the police arrive they ask a bunch of questions, a couple of the following being ‘have you pissed anyone off recently?’ & ‘how long have you lived here?’ For context we have lived here for nearly 5 years now (rules out mistaken identity as the police thought it could be meant for someone who lived here before us) I’m autistic & am very anti social & socially anxious, I genuinely don’t speak to anyone outside of our family, myself nor my partner or I had fell out with anyone recently. We had never had an issue like this before anywhere we have lived so this came as quite a shock so we just kept wondering & asking ourselves ‘why?’. We didn’t have cctv at the time because we never felt we needed it before. Police couldn’t do anything so the case was closed & we were told it’s probably youths messing around & being reckless & it’s unlikely to happen again especially if we installed cctv.

Afterwards I was a nervous wreck, I’m already a super anxious person, I wasn’t sleeping, I would lay awake all night watching the camera footage, when I would sleep I was having nightmares of intruders breaking in & smashing the windows, kicking the door down, I would leave all our curtains and windows closed all the time incase they came back. I went to my GP & told them I was struggling afterwards, I was put on anti depressants, anti anxiety meds & sleep tablets. After a few months I started getting back to normal, we started to let our guard down a little thinking it was truly a one off incident. Until April, when it happened again, but this time it was much worse.

Around 1:30am I was asleep in bed with our dog beside me, my partner & son were in the living room watching tv (my son is also autistic & is terrible with his sleep, he can be up till early hours in the morning most nights) my son had just not long fell asleep beside his dad on the sofa whilst they had been watching tv together. Suddenly I awake to a huge hang & a loud crash/smash, my partner shouting & my son screaming crying, I quickly tried to see what had happened when before I could even walk through the door my partner stopped me & handed our son to me & told me to not come in as there is glass everywhere & to call the police they had smashed our window again. While on the phone to police I quickly checked my son for any injuries as the glass must of sprayed over him, thankfully he hadn’t been injured but he had a chunk of glass on his t-shirt & glass specs in his hair, I could see tiny specs shining on his skin, I had to give him a shower to get rid of it all, I called my dad again to come take him & agreed we’d stay & speak to police, board up the window then make our own way over to my partners to stay with them for a while. I hadn’t seen the living room yet, I didn’t realise just how bad it was until the police arrived & I went in to speak with them. The window had been completely shattered into smithereens, the window frame had cracked down the middle, our camera had been knocked down, the glass was everywhere, all over our sofa, my son’s teddy’s, there were glass chunks in our dogs water bowl! Even worse of all the brick had actually entered our home this time.. & had landed directly on our dogs bed on the other side of the room. Thankfully she wasn’t on it at the time but if she had I dread to think the outcome, we were very lucky she wasn’t. We inspected the cctv footage & again saw two young adult males in all black with masks and gloves with bricks stuffed in their pockets. The police again said they can’t do anything as they’re faced were covered & the gloves would rule out any forensic fingerprints on the brick. All our neighbouring housing cameras were conveniently ‘not working’ that night. Nothing more could be done so the case was closed almost immediately.

Once they left myself & my partner boarded up the window, packed a suitcase full of clothes & essentials & made our way to my parents. My son was still awake & couldn’t sleep by himself, he used to be able to sleep independently in his own room but after this he would not sleep alone. I was awake all night obsessively looking through the footage, I paused it at one point of the video & could see the one males face wasn’t completely covered, only his mouth & part of his nose was covered, I could see his eyes, forehead & top of his nose, to me looks he looks dark skinned/black. I mentioned this to police the following day & sent the photo to which I was told the case was already closed so there’s nothing more they can do. I posted to our local neighbourhood watch group which was mostly unhelpful & full of people asking ‘well have you pissed anyone off lately? People don’t just brick windows for no good reason’ in other words we must of done something deserving of this. A lot of people did comment & agree it looks like a black male despite the footage being terrible.

As of right now I’m at a loss, I have no idea who could be responsible for this, the police are being unhelpful & I’m sure we’ll probably never find out who is doing this. We are still staying with my parents months later, we are waiting to be moved through our housing association, we have been told it could take months despite being in urgent banding & direct letting/direct offer.

Sorry this has happened to you. Have you had anyone selling at the door? I had someone trying to sell windows. He seemed a bit dodgy. I politely said I didn't want new windows. He asked me to take a leaflet for my husband. I'm a widow but didn't mention that. Just said no thank you. The window next to dds bed got smashed. Looked like by something like a catapult.
I logged it with the police but they weren't interested as I wasn't able to provide evidence. It hasn't happened again and was a few years ago

Sanguinello · 09/06/2026 23:46

Just to add there's no one else it could have been as we have no enemies

Bonnie3944 · 09/06/2026 23:55

@Sanguinello Not as of lately no, we don’t answer the door to anyone unless we’re expecting someone, that is a very good point though, I had never even thought of that. That’s just awful, I hope your dds okay?! Sounds about right for police, I feel they don’t take stuff like this seriously enough.

Could it have been intended for the other flat?

She's fine thanks. It only broke the outside pane and must have happened when we were out. Yours is worse. I wonder if it's mistaken identity.

fiveflames · 10/06/2026 00:07

What utter scum we have going around doing stuff like this.

Bonnie3944 · 10/06/2026 00:19

@MrsMoastyToasty This has crossed our minds a lot actually, one of the flats on the bottom level reeks of* *cannabis, we suspect a possible grow. They’ve never bothered us so we’ve always just minded our business. We noticed after the first time it happened they were suddenly hanging about outside the front all the time, which was unusual as in the whole 5 years iv been here I’ve only seen them maybe a handful of times, suddenly I was seeing them standing outside every day. Figured I was being paranoid & over vigilant, brushed it off until the second time it happened, my partner knocked door to door to see if anyone had any cctv footage the following day & when talking to these neighbours in particular my partner discovered they were going to moving in a few days, the flat they are in is through the council & said they are going to be private renting instead. I saw on the camera only 4 days after the window was smashed they were packing up a moving van & left.

Hard to be sure of course but I’d hedge my bets on this being something to do with it if you do not have any personal issues with anyone and they were potentially growing in the flat. The suddenly moving out would also make me suspicious that they were needing to do so because of a safety concern. Very much possible that it’s a case of mistaken flat identity.

OneThreadOnlybyN · 10/06/2026 00:51

🤗I'm sorry, that must have been terrifying
It's great your parents are able to have you stay 🌷

Hiwever, as they have moved out, do you think you could try moving back, try to get back to some semblance of normal for your & your sons sake?

Persephonia1966 · 10/06/2026 03:48

Are you renting or do you own the house? When we had all our windows smashed (over a decade ago) I was very upset but basically had a meeting with the police and a representative of the housing agency who agreed to replace the glass with special smash resistant glass. It didn't happen again but if it had then any brick would have bounced back into their stupid heads. If you are renting (and want to stay there) you could ask the landlord/whoever to do this. If you are good tenants then a threat of leaving might be an incentive to them. If you own the house you could sort it yourself. The window needs replacing anyway. Also get cameras.
I know that doesn't fix the issue in the broader sense. But it did give me peace of mind knowing that people couldn't just smash the windows anymore. And best case scenario they try again and knock themselves out.

AutumnAllTheWay · 10/06/2026 05:56

Why do you keep going on about him being black? Haven't mentioned his height or anything else?

Persephonia1966 · 10/06/2026 07:42

You could also try talking to your MP. Some are better than others. But if you have been left with no closure and no house you feel safe in then they might be able to at least chase even if they don't have direct powers. Eg the HA should have found you somewhere else or at least done something preventative about the windows. And the police response was poor. Smashing house windows isn't petty vandalism it's an intimidation.

Toooldtocare25 · 10/06/2026 07:46

The masks and gloves would make it virtually impossible. Have you had any crime prevention help at all from the police, if not you should have.

DDivaStar · 10/06/2026 07:48

These are utter scumbags and inept ones at that. I hope you can find alternative accommodation soon, totally understandable you wouldn't want to go back.

I understand your frustration with the police but realistically they've got little to identify the attackers.

She has mentioned it once! If the guy was black then that is a fact or are we not allowed to deal in facts anymore?

Did you mention this suspected cannabis farm to the police when they visited?

Bonnie3944 · 10/06/2026 09:53

@AutumnAllTheWay I mentioned he was black one time in this post because that’s what he looked like. It’s a physical descriptor, not a criticism. “You haven’t mentioned height or anything els” isn’t true, I also described his age, clothing, mask, and gloves. Describing someone’s appearance accurately isn’t racism or a criticism, it’s providing identifying information. If he had been white, Asian, or any other ethnicity, I would have described that too. Hope this helps!

More importantly @Bonnie3944 . . . did you mention the suspected cannabis farm to the police when they visited?

Bonnie3944 · 10/06/2026 09:57

@greatvisuals Yes this was brought up, police didn’t take it seriously & stated it’s just a speculation as we had no real evidence of this besides the smell. They knocked door to door on all our neighbours too & nothing came of it.

OP posts:
greatvisuals · 10/06/2026 10:00

That's a shame as it is almost certainly the reason for the bricks. No-one likes rival growers on their patch.

Bonnie3944 · 10/06/2026 10:00

I think the same but as you said there’s no way of knowing for sure unfortunately since they’ve moved. Mistaken identity seems like the only possible scenario in my opinion as we don’t have issues with anybody.

OP posts:
ViciousCurrentBun · 10/06/2026 10:03

Do not worry about describing he was black some people and they are usually virtue signalling people jump on that stuff. I am mixed race and it’s a fair description just like DH is a very slim tall almost skinny white guy. I think it’s the flat below they were after. If you are with a HA log it with them and ask about relocation. Though if they have moved it may all be over.

Bonnie3944 · 10/06/2026 10:18

@Persephonia1966 We’re renting it’s a council property, we had someone come out from homesplus the following day to replace the window & he said it was laminated so if it was to be smashed again instead of the glass spraying all over it would just stick in place instead essentially making it safer if it were to happen again. He also gave us adhesive laminate sheets for the rest of the windows on that particular side of the property such as ours & our son’s bedrooms. We have a cctv camera in the window, we also had a flood light installed hoping it would just deter this from happening again but despite having these security measures in place it hasn’t stopped them from reoffending unfortunately.

OP posts:
Bonnie3944 · 10/06/2026 10:30

@Toooldtocare25 Yes they told us to install a camera after the incident in Jan so we did & also installed flood lights, they gave us references numbers for the council to replace the windows, that’s about all that could be done. Despite having the camera & flood lights for the April incident it still didn’t prevent or deter them from reoffending unfortunately. Thankfully we’re on direct letting with our housing association, we’re just waiting for a property to become available.

Mistaken identity by the sound of it. They’re targeting someone else but have your address for some reason.
