How to share cleaning products in holiday let.

Not sure if this is the right place but couldn't find a suitable topic under holidays.

I am taking over a holiday let business and will be offering washing and dishwasher tabs for use in the let. I think they should go in a secure store (kilner jar type), marked up but partner thinks they should be left in original box.

I'm also minded to put a child lock on the cupboard. Thoughts please.

TIA.

Think it needs to be in packaging in case of allergies or brand preferences

I agree with the secure jar and child lock. I don’t own a holiday key but as a parent who uses them kids get into everything especially on holiday when it’s a new environment. Better to avoid any issues

Leave in original box in a high press or provide a child lock.

Rubbleonthedouble2 · 09/06/2026 10:52

Some kind of storage container so that you can buy in bulk and ration them per visit, imo. They're not cheap!

If your property is the type that attracts families with young children then maybe to child lock. Tbh I stayed in a chalet with a toddler and we just put everything in the high cupboards.

Scampuss · 09/06/2026 10:53

I'd rather see the original box. If there is an accident it means the product details are immediately available. Pretty jars can also make the products more appealing to kids.

JustAnotherWhinger · 09/06/2026 10:54

I put them in a high cupboard with child lock in the original containers. I store the bulk of them in a killer jar in my (locked) supply cupboard and put a number back in the original box for each guest.

LadyLooo · 09/06/2026 10:56

Keep them in a box and stick them up in a higher cupboard.

Whyherewego · 09/06/2026 10:57

I'd agree with putting a reasonable allocation of items in a secure jar or whatever. Then have an info sheet separately with the brand / product type so people can consult if they need the info

Most let's only provide a couple of dishwasher tablets and I have never know washing tablets to be left. They are always in a plastic box under or near the sink, never in the original package.

mondaytosunday · 09/06/2026 10:58

I have a holiday let and the dishwasher tabs/laundry are kept in original packaging under the sink. But be aware people often take them home as if a freebie so wouldn’t leave loads, just a few to get through the week. It’s up to the parents to monitor their kids.

Ruralletliving · 09/06/2026 11:07

Thanks everyone.

@mondaytosunday I agree I don't want to have people taking advantage.

A few in the original box, securely stored is the way to go I think!

We’ve never stayed anywhere where they’ve been in the original packaging, there’s usually a couple in a jar or container in the cupboard under the sink or sometimes on the worktop. A couple of times they’ve just been loose in a cupboard.

ElegantDresses · 09/06/2026 11:24

Usually just a few in a tupperware box, parents can move them up high. Original boxes can take up a lot of space. If I had allergies I'd take my own.

Blarn · 09/06/2026 11:40

Box and high shelf. You could leave enough in the box for the duration of the stay then top it up/cleaner tops it up for the next guests. My dd has sensitive skin and some very scented washing things can make her itchy, I'd rather know if I can use what's provided or need to pick something up.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 09/06/2026 11:45

If you’re that fussy about brand allergies etc surely you take your own? People will be pleased there’s any there tbh, even if it’s only one or two until they find their feet with local shops etc and then they can still buy their own box for the last couple of days
if they need more.

Again, it’s on parents to secure or move items they don’t want their kids accessing. I would put them where you expect to find them so under sink or near washing machine etc, As long as there is a high cupboard (even if the ones usually
for cups and glasses etc) they can move them out of reach if needed.

Soontobe60 · 09/06/2026 11:50

Having just come home from Centerparcs, they leave 2 dishwasher tabs in the cabins not in an original box.
I think you’re over thinking this. Either don’t leave any and make it clear that guests need to provide their own, or leave a few in the original box somewhere out of reach of any small children. I wouldn’t leave any clothes detergent at all though! Brands are so personal to individuals.

😂 at killer jar

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/06/2026 12:37

Original box in case of accidental poisoning

This seems like the best option. But I'd only top up with the exact same product. Accuracy is important if there is an accident.

Thanks all again
