Does anyone know Paris well?

Does anyone know Paris well? I want to book a trip but I’m feeling overwhelmed by all the different areas to stay in! We’re two females, so we want somewhere very safe. We’d like to visit the Moulin Rouge, the Palace of Versailles, Disneyland, and do some sightseeing. We love culture and food. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

Montparnasse is a safe area to stay with easy access to Versailles for the day. Moulin Rouge is the other side but good links via metro. I would avoid north east Paris. It also depends on your budget!

I should have said! Ideally I’d like to spend no more than £700 for 4 nights.

Low numbered arrondissements!
Personally, I like the 6th, near Luxembourg. It’s safe and feels very comfortable to be in. Easy access to the metro system, walking distance of Notre Dame and the surrounding areas, nice morning walks in the park!

This is fantastic and exactly the type of thing I’ve been looking for, but it leaves me feeling even more overwhelmed. I’m frightened of getting it wrong, I suppose, and I’m very indecisive — not a good combination when planning trips!

I spend a lot of time in Paris. First it is a small city compared to London so easy to get around. You will (unless you go to Versailles) be spending all your time inside the main ring road (the Peripherique).

Inside this road the Metro network is great so you won't go too far wrong almost whereever you stay. Don't go outside the ring road without care as Paris is ringed with less attractive suburbs some (not all) of which are not at all nice.

The link you were sent earlier is good. My advice would be to try to avoid staying with 200m of the main railway stations and subject to that be as central as poss. Google streetview can be really useful to get an idea of the location.

Most of all enjoy yourself (and try not to look too much like a tourist on the Metro)!

Usually 5th or 6th. But if you are on slightly more of a budget my first thought would be the 11th and places close to the Bastille. The immediate location of the Bastille can be a little bit scuzzy but like in London a 100m can make a huge difference.

Zerodarkforty · 09/06/2026 08:22

I can find some nice hotels in the 6th (in budget) but lots of the reviews are saying it is noisy at night! Earplugs it is.

I know Paris very well and lived there for some years. I've stayed all over, but my favourite area to stay in as a tourist is the 5th arrondissement, for the general vibe and walkability. However, it's expensive and you might struggle to find anywhere in that neighbourhood on your budget.
I've also stayed around the Montparnasse area and there are plenty of safe and affordable places around there - good metro connections and still easy to walk to the tourist spots that you might want to visit.

MyCloak · 09/06/2026 08:37

I used to live in Montparnasse, though these days, when I’m in Paris, I stay with friends out in the fragrant southwestern burbs. The reason I’m posting is just to say that Paris isn’t some kind of dystopian fiesta of crime, contrary to what many Mn posters appear to think, so don’t worry too much! Take the same precautions on the street and on the metro that you would take in London, and mind yourself in the vicinity of the main railway stations.

This is a fabulous hotel in a great area. Staff very helpful and some great restaurants nearby
the last few times I’ve been to Paris we’ve walked everywhere. The Musee D’Orsay, the Orangerie, Sacre Coeur, wandering round Saint Germaine and the left bank. I think Notre Dame had reopened. Buying bread and cheese and picnicking in one of the parks
its a wonderful city

I can get an excellent deal to stay in the 2nd. It would save me some money! Worried about the area though. It’s called NESTAY Sentier.

Why do you refer to yourself and friend as "two females"? If other people (especially men) refer to women like that it comes over as very derogatory and demeaning. And as though they are afraid of the word "women".

Because we are female? Didn’t know that was an offensive term.

Why are you worried about the area? It's a buzzy area, well-connected on the metro, and with lots of the obvious tourist destinations of central Paris within walking distance.

Zerodarkforty · 09/06/2026 14:32

A quick Google search said it can be seedy and have sex workers around at night

@Zerodarkforty I stayed in the 13th and felt safe. It's just next to the 5th arrondissement, still central and easily walkable, but quieter and a bit less touristy. Plenty of bars and restaurants but not too noisy at night.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/06/2026 14:51

Brilliantly useful thread, thank you OP, I’m planning a trip too and have been boggled by where to stay. We’ll have two small children with us. I’m piggy backing here for inspiration.

SquashPenguin · 09/06/2026 14:54

Another vote for the Montparnasse area. Felt very safe there compared to other bits of Paris.

I often often meet people for drinks / dinner there in the evenings. It's completely fine. I assume you're not afraid of seeing a sex shop if you're planning on going to the Moulin Rouge.

It’s more the men that would use a sex worker I’d be worried about!

I used to live right on the edge of Pigalle which is basically the red light area. Never felt safer! Sleazy men not interested in me, as there were clearly so many other distractions.
