What is bus driver's responsibility

purpleme12 · 08/06/2026 20:32

If a passenger on bus is causing trouble
An adult unknown to the children started having a go at them FUCKING this and FUCKING that and threatening them and got physical with one grabbing the child by the collar.

What are the responsibilities of the bus driver here? Do they have any? Are they taught anything about this situation?

Thanks

There was attacks on buses and bus drivers where I live, the drivers probably don't want any hassle or injury, do you know what happened after the incident did the kids/man get off the bus ?

I see it was a woman i misread.

I have known a bus driver refuse to move until a passenger who was being violently abusive, got off. But she refused, and carried on being extremely abusive, so the driver called the police, who did arrive pretty quickly.

I was not there myself

TBH OP, your opening post and some follows ups haven't been clear at all! Your first post included:
An adult unknown to the children started having a go at them

Sorry, who are THE children? Yours, someone elses, some other random person also NOT on the bus? You haven't been clear at all so people are confused.

They are some children on the bus

It seems pretty unfair that the OP's account is assumed to be inaccurate. There are people off their faces on public transport quite frequently. It's easier to deal with on a train, in some ways, as you can move carriage.

I mean to be honest though that didn't detract from the question that my thread asked about. Which people have answered

And they were just sitting there and some randomer starting ranting?

purpleme12 · 10/06/2026 21:49

I did live chat with 101 online and the person has said he will make officers aware of the incident and if a report has been made it will be linked to that. He said we are unable to investigate and look at CCTV unless we hear from the victim.

He didn't take a lot of details from me about the time or anything.

I thought you could report a crime that you witnessed even if you weren't the direct victim and they'd investigate still (if it is something they'd investigate which this is)

I guess when a police officer sees it he might want to look at the CCTV anyway maybe

Honestly I'm not sure it's much use going over things that have already been said.

It's fine if you're sceptical.

Most people have answered the queries I've had and helped.

I was asking because it sounds like someone on one. I was trying to ascertain how it went from 0 to 100 mph so fast.

In most parts of the country it’s impossible to get the police to look into anything but the most serious crime. Rapes, assaults, burglaries are down the priority list apparently.

So even if they get the CCTV, the chances of finding the person, prosecuting them and convicting them is not necessarily high. It may also take several years

purpleme12 · 10/06/2026 21:58

Possibly.

But on the other hand i had a skateboard stolen from outside my door. caught on my camera. i reported it to the police - not really expecting much, just doing it on the off change they knew who it was or it helped them to know about crime stats in area. But they did look into it - found who it was - arrested him - went to court and got suspended sentence. So sometimes it's worth reporting just in case.

You must live a very low crime area then, I live in a small town and only the most violent crimes seem to be worth looking into.

I still can’t get my head round why you wanted to report the driver though.

purpleme12 · Yesterday 06:54

To be fair, I asked the question about what was his responsibility. As I wasn't sure. That's literally what the the OP said. I don't think I've actually said that I wanted to report the driver..A few people on here have said about drivers stopping so I don't think it was an unreasonable thing to wonder about.

And no, when I look up about if where I live is low crime rate or not, it says it's considered to have a low to high crime rate

They are not allowed to 'intervene'.

They are not trained in security or de-escalation & are very vulnerable due to lone working. The number of assaults on bus drivers is very high.

They have a duty to do what they can to keep people safe (occupiers liability) but that would be stopping the bus & calling police & asking people to evacuate the bus (opening the emergency exit if needed & tannoy announcement).
