Please tell me positive stuff about total knee replacement.
I am booked in for Thursday.
Googling what aids help- like ice packs cushions etc just leads to people saying it hurts a lot.
Which I expect but still it would be nice to have some positive stories.
When this one is done I will need the other one done so no choice really
please tell me something good

it changed my mothers life for the better totally - do the exercises and follow
advice to letter - she had both done like you and it was short term pain but the long term gain has meant she has gone from
housebound to walking around South Africa and the Alps on group holidays . you can do it
!! it is worth it so take it hour by hour and you will be really proud of yourself !

and she was over 80 when she had it done - she said that the exercises hurt but they definitely worked and accelerated her recovery - she has no pain now only stiffness and looks
about 10 years younger

The exercises are a killer but the more you do them the better end result, I paid for an evil private physio who I hated hated hated however I can just about do everything with my knee now and am no longer in pain.

My brother had one knee replaced a couple of years ago. He's so much more mobile now and is very happy he had it done. He said the physio wasn't a lot of fun but it was definitely worth it.

My dad had his knees done about 6 or 7 years ago. So important to do the exercises and follow the instructions. He had a couple of bad days pain-wise but was up and about after each relatively quickly. No issues with them and he’s happily walking all over the place these days rather than having those a stick.

Do the physio!

My mother didn't and has had a shite recovery. But she's an ex nurse and absolutely wouldn't be told. She's mid 70s with lots of mobility issues and the idea of swimming or doing the physio was too much apparently. I have no sympathy left tbh.

Hope yours goes well!

My 85 year old mother has had both knees done in last few years. She has better mobility and less pain.

Mosaic123 · 07/06/2026 20:33

My Dad did cycling on an exercise bike before the operation in order to strengthen the muscles around the joint.

I'm 49 and had mine done last year. Need the other doing too.
This is the most painful operation I've ever had and prepare yourself for the first 3 days of hell as nothing will touch the pain.

Make sure you have at least 3 ice packs to rotate. I'm 10 month PO and am still in agony, although I do have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and I was in surgery fir about 5 hours as they struggled to get my ligaments to attach to the implant.

Get something to help you lift your leg in the first weeks.

It's a big operation, do all your exercises and ensure you've got good pain relief at home as paracetamol or Ibrupofen won't even touch the sides. I'm allergic to morphine so had oxicodine.

I'm going to wait as long as possible for the next one. I had no choice with the first as I was collapsing in pain.
Sending you all my love xxxx

DM has it done in her 80s. It was life-changing.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 07/06/2026 21:03

I've had both my knees done. It was painful afterwards but the pain relief worked well for me and I came off the drugs, apart from the occasional cocodamol, after eight weeks. I was given temazipan as well as painkillers and I felt unwell when I came off that, though it didn't last long. You might need laxatives if you are taking lots of opiates.
I was back at work after three months and walking normally.
I can walk for miles now, but can't run, kneel or lift anything slightly heavy in case I hurt my knees.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 07/06/2026 21:04

Apologies, just checked, it was tramadol not temazepam.
