First night on new mattress...

I haven't been able to settle. In my head it's too firm and my hips are achey (I'm a side sleeper). We tried it in the shop and it was lovely, and it's a very good quality mattress. I'm feeling a bit upset and hoping I'll get used to it.

Looking for positive tales of first night mattress worries! 😩

Could you get a nice thick mattress topper? It could just be you getting used to the firmness though if you've been used to a really sunken one

We do have a mattress topper but it's a few years old now. Perhaps we need a new one, although we've spent out so much on the mattress I'm not sure we could afford to straight away.

You've probably just got to get used to it. I've got an extra firm one and though it was weird at first, I soon started to absolutely love it. Does wonders for my back😊

This happened to us. We realised we had it wrong side up. So flipped it around the next day and it was fine. I believe some mattresses can be slept on either side but maybe yours (and mine) aren’t. the mattress was

The showroom ones have been bounced on by loads of people, so they've softened up. It's supposed to take 30-60 days to soften and mould to your shape.

You can apparently speed this up by crawling, walking and/or bouncing on it. As you've got a topper, try putting a duvet under/over it for a bit of extra padding while you gradually soften the mattress up.

Thanks all. I believe this is an 'any which way' mattress but thank you for the suggestion.

@SomeGarlic thanks for that- maybe I'll get the kids to bounce on it later today! I'm sure they'd be up for it.

DP just woke up from a horrible dream so not a great first night for him either.

The bed I'm in now, it's now got a rip in the cover of the mattress. But I won't get rid of it yet as it's so comfortable. When I first got it I thought it was a mistake, it was too firm, it took me a while to get used to it, and now it feels like heaven when I get into bed. Give it a few nights, you'll adjust.

This gives me hope! Thank you 🙏

I have a spinal injury and wake up with my legs both fully numb if I sleep on an unfamiliar plain mattress. When staying at hotels and such, I request that they put two duvets under the sheet to soften it up. It works enough for me that I'm able to walk the next day.

Adding one should help keep you comfortable while you break in the mattress, try removing it after a couple of months and see how it feels then.

Thanks for the tip, very useful! @DoAWheelie 🙏

I remember being told to put some extra padding on the mattress when you are getting used to it.
I have just received a new mattress topper from JL not a hugely thick one, one to keep the mattress protected and that feels much softer than the old one I had. Was £45 for a double.

I'm still trying to get used to my "new" mattress (medium) after 8 years. I have a decent mattress topper but I also have a duvet underneath to make it bearable. The salesman said the more use the more likely it is to soften so either he was a liar or I should have borrowed some children to jump on it. Definitely worth trying!

I have a lovely one from Temu. Was £10 for a king
