Who sleeps in downstairs bedroom?

princesspeppax · 06/06/2026 22:36

Potentially moving to bigger house, 4 bed when we are currently 3 bed. Me, DH, DD11 and DS9 & DS5 (very nearly 6)

3 bedrooms upstairs and 1 downstairs - who gets downstairs?

DD11 very sensible and says she would be OK downstairs, not sure in reality how it would be

DD9 not keen on being downstairs alone

DD5 to small still

options are me & dh downstairs, 3 dc’s upstair. All sleep well so no issues there but worried at fire etc I know in reality its slightly irrational when we sit downstairs watching tv currently while they are upstairs in bed but I do feel a bit irked at the thought of different level from them

or DD11 downstairs, she says she would be fine with either but I do think she’d prefer upstairs and the thought of potential intruders or break ins and that being the first room from the door

whats other people’s thoughts?
anyone else got a similar layout and happy to share what works best for them?

You and DH go downstairs.

TappingTed · 06/06/2026 22:39

When my kids were younger I had the downstairs room. Ds got it when he turned 14/15 though…

You and DH go downstairs.

Yes I think this is the best option and smoke alarms in all upstairs bedrooms and on the landing - I’m sure it’ll be fine but I think that’s the safest option. It also gives you a bit more privacy.

BridgetJonesV2 · 06/06/2026 22:40

They're all too young to sleep downstairs, it's you and DH until they are older teenagers.

Allogy · 06/06/2026 22:40

Friends of mine squeezed into a small downstairs bedroom until eldest was about 18.

Gateappreciation · 06/06/2026 22:41

Dd 11 downstairs, or could ds share room for a year, and make downstairs bedroom their den, (or make biggest room their room);and then reassess. Dd11 will be a year older then, and you’ll have got used to the creaks in the house etc.

We moved into a 3 bedroom flat with an upstairs when I was 8, I was given the downstairs room which was right opposite the front door, my parents and my brother were upstairs. I don’t recall how the room selection went but tbh I remember not really caring. The problem was the bigger room was upstairs so understandably my parents really needed the bigger room for all of their stuff.

Can whoever shares still share for a few more years but with the option to use downstairs room for gaming/activities/tv, so only upstairs to sleep.

Maddy70 · 06/06/2026 22:44

Adults downstairs.

Titsywoo · 06/06/2026 22:47

We have a bungalow with a loft conversion - we are in the downstairs bedroom (although it has its own hallway and bathroom so feels seperate from the main part of the house) and the kids are upstairs. It felt safer that way to us.

giemepeace · 06/06/2026 23:19

We have the same layout but 2 kids so until now weve all been upstairs and downstairs room has been spare room and office. Youngest has had a small room so we are planning to move DD (10.5) downstairs. She’s excited as the dog isn’t allowed upstairs so she can have him in her room! Tbh I hadn’t even thought about an intruder and I doubt that’s occurred to her. I feel I wake to small noises, I think I will be able to respond if needed. My main worry actually is that she’s a big foodie and that she will be even more inclined to help herself to snacks.

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 06/06/2026 23:29

My DS moved into
a downstairs room at 15, we put a fire door on the room with a key lock, we changed our burglar alarm system and had sensors put on his windows, and we had cctv over his window anyway- he is now 22 and very happy with his choice!!

Davros · 06/06/2026 23:35

For me it might depend where the bathrooms are

InTheCludgie · 07/06/2026 07:59

We have a four bed with one of the rooms downstairs, two kids. The smallest bedroom is more of a box room so DH and I have the downstairs room, box room is used for hobbies. Downside is there's only one bathroom so the odd time we need to pee through the night we have to traipse upstairs.

Twasasurprise · 07/06/2026 08:08

Adults downstairs

bumptybum · 07/06/2026 08:14

I think you’re overthinking this. It would be weird for DS9 ad 5 To be downstairs if you think There is any issue with DD11 Being downstairs. She’s older and sensible and doesn’t mind being there

What are the actual rooms like? What is the downstairs room like? Is it a big room which is the biggest room?

princesspeppax · 07/06/2026 08:35

Downstairs room is smallest but still a double room, 3 upstairs larger. Bathroom also upstairs. I’m happy for me and DH to sleep downstairs and i’m a light sleeper so I like to think i’d wake with any noises but I still feel a bit strange at the thought and I dont know if i’m just over thinking it… its more if fire etc and I wouldnt be on same floor as the children thats my biggest worry

Whoever goes in the downstairs room, you’re going to be on a different floor to at least one of your children, aren’t you? If your 11 year old is downstairs then you’ll be on a different floor to her. That’s just what happens with a downstairs bedroom.

ifonly4 · 07/06/2026 08:52

You and DH downstairs. When DD is older, you could reconsider then.

Captainladder · 07/06/2026 09:08

We live in a converted bungalow and the biggest room is upstairs, DH and I sleep there, kids (now 17 and 15) sleep downstairs in separate rooms. They slept downstairs but shared a room when they were younger - 4 and 6. We have always slept with the bedroom door open because of the cat anyway and I'm a very light sleeper so would wake if they got up for any reason.
I guess it's what your comfortable with and what the area you live in is like safety wise?
we live in a little village and crime is low. I don't think I'd have done the same in a city.

Randomchat · 07/06/2026 09:13

I worry more about burglars than fires so I'd sleep downstairs. With good fire alarm systems and an escape plan for upstairs.

MightyGoldBear · 07/06/2026 09:14

My 11 year old has a bedroom downstairs they love it. No issues at all. Smoke alarms everywhere doors open for cats anyway. Have security cameras etc we are rural so feel pretty safe.

ApricotRow · 07/06/2026 09:15

you and dh downstairs, otherwise would you not disturb them once they’ve gone to bed in the evening. My kids would never sleep with their doors closed.

TheLightBetween · 07/06/2026 09:19

What's the risk? What are you scared of?

Risk of death/injury in house fire is higher than being attacked by a stranger inside a locked home.

However risks of sneaking out//letting people in is higher than both (I mean in teenage years)

I would still put all upstairs - with fire alarms and I would make sure they knew what to do in a fire (for example some windows have safety features which means you can't open them, so the older ones at least need to know how to override that)
