What's the oddest thing you've seen listed on a CV?

What's the weirdest thing you've seen on a CV? I received one in application for a job and they had put a hobbies section in which they'd listed "smoking".

I once found someone claim they had worked in the same bar as me at the same time as an assistant manager (same as I was). Contacted the GM because they had him down as a reference and he had never heard of her. The email address was almost legit so they had faked that too, think [email protected] as the real one but the one they had given was [email protected] so they had gone to real effort to fake it. Called them in for an interview out of curiosity, mentioned I had worked there too and they claimed to have heard of me, couldn’t name any other staff though obviously except the GM who had his name on the website. It was only a waitressing job so we would have hired with no experience if the person was the right fit and trained them up.

Ive had 2 corker job applications.

One was someone who filled an appliction form, got it all mangled in the typewriter with spelling mistakes and all sorts of weird stuff, then retyped it out, still with spelling mistakes and taped it over the original page, at an angle, with creases and tippex. Then went on to tell us about their attention to detail.

My second favourite was one whose statement started 'I'll bet you are wondering why a man like me is applying for a job like this'. Er, no mate.

This happened to a colleague of mine - the woman put her BMI on her CV.

It was of zero relevance for the job and she had a 'normal' BMI.

I look at CVs as part of my job - I’ve seen some fucking wild thing that include (not same person) - a paragraph on how much of a genius he was, hobbies: gossiping, work experience: not needed as they were ‘twice gifted/exceptional. It’s so crazy 🤣

A very earnest, well-qualified American candidate for a Cambridge postgrad course who included an enormous amount of detail about their relationship with Jesus and how it guided their life. I get where this comes from, obviously, but it was eye-opening to find someone intelligent enough to be making a competitive application but also arrogant/insular enough not to realise this was massively inappropriate.

How is it arrogant and insular? It’s his belief and he may very well believe that Jesus led him to that course etc. I’m a Christian and I feel I have been led to certain things in my life , I mean I already believe that we are created by God, so go figure. Anyway sorry for my ramble, but what’s arrogant and insular about what he said?

Ansjovis · Today 13:53

I once read a CV for a woman and it included a not insignificantly sized section on her husband, including his educational background and current occupation. I later came to understand that this was there for cultural reasons but it still made me quite sad to see.

Too funny. 😂 Keep them coming. People are bonkers. And clearly we're devolving as a species.

*Side note, why no laughter reaction MN? 🤔

I, in my youth, played a very obscure sport to a very high level including a single international appearance. I have it on my CV because it always gets a reaction. I always get asked about it. It’s a good way to break the ice.

You have to tell us what it is?!

It's not in parts of America, or even when applying for jobs here in some American firms.

Now I don't know how a haulage firm or a gym chain can identify as Christian, but many very much do

Didn't get the luxury of reading the CV but I was employed with someone who boasted about how they were a celebrity hire because they'd written on their CV that they were on an episode of don't tell the bride.

I'd never seen don't tell the bride until that point and then decided to have a watch of his episode and I'm surprised she went ahead with the marriage.

Edited: with, not by! They were my peer

Whats not to like here? Showing abilities in small batch manufacturing, aseptic techniques and general science/ biology.

I once interviewed someone for an internal job, when I asked him about a time he’d interacted with senior management he went on to tell me how he got drunk and had a laugh with a director at the previous Christmas party.

Under the "Professional Body" section people would write their own name- saw this many times, made me laugh that so many people didn't know what it meant but interpreted it the same way 🤣

There was a question about how do you manage your time and someone wrote "I like to go with the flow".

As a few other people mentioned, "why did you leave your last job?" always had stories of betrayal and vengeance.

Betrayal and vengeance 😂😂😂😂😂😂

rhino12345 · Today 14:03

Not a CV as such, but as part of his application he'd listed his salary expectation (which wasn't asked for, might I add!) which was astronomically high for the position (from memory it was about £130,000 for a job which on average pays about £47,500). He also had very little relavent experience.
Whilst we admired his confidence, we politely replied stating that it would be an idea to research average salaries in this field, and that this position typically pays around the £50K mark.
This man replied with a complete tirade, referring to our (female) head of HR as a "bitch" and claiming that we were exploiting people. Completely insane.

That's extremely relevant? They have an interest in science as well as being able to practically apply sciences

I work in recruitment, so… many.

Personal favourites are:

The CV that had an in depth description of Scientology, including quotes from Dianetics.

The person who put my company name on her CV and when we correctly informed her she doesn’t work for us she said “no, but I’d like to - I was manifesting.”

My one really shameful experience in recruitment many years ago was when as an internal recruiter I got a really crappy CV and forwarded to the nice admin person - ‘have a read through this - and send out the er I think not’ response ( she knew what I meant) - and I copied in the person who sent it in error

My husband once ordered a specialist part for his truck that had to be shipped from a company in the USA. It came with a complementary Bible. Really, really strange to us Brits, that religion has to be inserted into every day commercial transactions.

MrsMoastyToasty · Today 14:10

The one where the applicant said they were "a people person". The same applicant also placed a heart over every lower case "i" or "j" instead of a dot. (We had asked for handwritten applications).
The one where the applicant said they had a Sitting Gills award. We finally worked out that they had studied a City and Guilds subject.
