JML magic stitch or similar for hemming trousers?

Little DD is very very little. She has significantly short legs for her height (it’s a medical condition, she is perfectly healthy and will always be like this). Whenever she goes up a trouser size I have to take up the hems, it’s more than just ‘M&S extra short’ or whatever, it’s taking a third or more off of the length of them. I’ve been doing this for years and I’m no seamstress but it’s fine, I get it done, however recently she needed the next size up school trousers and I realised I needed to do this for (at least) 4 pairs in one go and… well it takes me ages! Can anyone suggest a technique, gadget or device to make this easier? I’m happy to invest a few ££ since this will be lifelong for her - but equally I don’t think a full size sewing machine is really what I need, I would have to store it somewhere and can imagine that I CBA to set it up unless it’s a really big job. Argos has this https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2203984?utm_custom6=LIA&deeplink=true&gclsrc=aw.ds&&cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59157%7Cacid:629-618-1342%7Ccid:20368875273%7Cagid:%7Ctid:%7Ccrid:%7Cnw:x%7Crnd:3983919062927316298%7Cdvc:m%7Cadp:%7Cmt:%7Cloc:9189606&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20368875273&utm_term=2203984&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=&utm_custom2=629-618-1342&GPDP=true&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19672026602&gbraid=0AAAAAD9II9n4RW4H7m1ZTYMhY2OWHbwWS&gclid=CjwKCAjwxITRBhBYEiwA6mZm7Qm4zDOQWFdUIP57mIqx-sm8AancM29DydwLOH3X7mNo5ScKku1vxRoCZmYQAvD_BwE has anyone used it?

Have you tried iron on hemming tape?
Also Popsy clothing do free alterations and sell black trousers.

BabieGiggles · 04/06/2026 18:32

I don’t find the iron on hemming tape to be enough, she is only little and still kind of tramples on the ends of trousers when dressing and undressing and they need something stronger really.

Great to know about Popsy, she needs a specific style of grey school trousers but useful for other clothes still.

I wouldn’t recommend it, it could just be me but I just couldn’t get it to work. A mini sewing machine may be more effective. I just use wonderweb at the moment.

I'd just buy a cheap secondhand sewing machine. You don't need anything fancy and they are usually really cheap.

PhoebeBuffay1234 · 04/06/2026 19:58

Definitely get a second hand sewing machine. Those mini ones are absolutely useless. You’ll get the hang of it soon and can practise with the trousers you’re taking up. If you’re having to get rid of 1/3 of the length, you could use that to your advantage to practise.

It’s not so much that I’m worried about the cost of a sewing machine, or how to use it, I’m more worried it’ll be one of those gadgets that lives at the back of a cupboard and it always seems like way too much effort to set up so I’ll just end up doing most things by hand anyway (ok perhaps not when I’ve got four to do like this week, but usually it’s only one every now and then!)

(I don’t have anywhere to leave one set up permanently, it’d be used on the kitchen table but have to be moved at dinner time!)

Can you hand sew? Sometimes dry cleaners do alterations too.

Was going to suggest the iron on stuff but you’ve discounted that.
