One enlarged breast. Why?

Posting here for traffic. Mum, 89, has developed one enlarged breast, why would this happen? I ask because she had a hospital appointment which my brother took her too. I live seven hours drive away so it was not possible to attend with her. I asked what they said but she can't remember ( diagnosed with dementia a couple of years ago). Brother was not in the appointment as mum felt embarrassed.

All I know is that it is not cancer. Thought I would post here in the hope that one of you lovely mumsnetters would have some knowledge. Mum says it is uncomfortable but not painful, there are no lumps, she has had a scan.

Are you sure it's not cancer? Can you call the hospital with her consent and find out the information they gave her? You don't have to have lumps to have breast cancer. There could also be an infection or something else benign. Either way, I'd revisit the information in case there's something she needs to be doing.

Why would they have seen her on her own if she has dementia especially as something as important as this? How do you know cancer was not mentioned? I’d be following this up for her they will speak to you given the circumstances

I think you need to follow up, if it’s uncomfortable it could be cancer or an infection.

How do you know it’s not cancer? One enlarged breast is one of the major symptoms isn’t it?

I think it can be of inflammatory cancer, but not an expert. I don't think that has lumps, more redness.

It could well be cancer. The lump can be more flat saucer shape than a round lump. She needs to the GP and ask to referred to breast clinic at hospital.

Do you have power of attorney for health? That way you can have discussions with health professionals on her behalf. Or does your brother?

Thanks for replies. She has had scans that showed no cancer. This was follow up meeting. She is at early stage of dementia and thankfully, medication has been helping keep things steady. I have messaged brother and awaiting reply. We do have power of attorney for health and my two brothers, who live nearer, manage her medications, filling the weekly pill box and ordering repeat prescriptions (she has other health issues). She has a carer every morning but manages the rest of the day, does her lunch (a salad with chicken, boiled eggs or tuna) and dinner plus neighbour cooks meals for her. I am visiting for an extended stay towards the end of June so will have time to organise a gp visit if necessary (extremely difficult nowadays Sad.
