Gas or electric hob

We are in the process of looking at a new kitchen. I had a local company come to measure up yesterday.
We are wanting a gas hob, the person who came to measure up said we should go for an induction hob, easy to clean, gas hobs to be phased out at some point and being less efficient.

Last winter we had several power cuts, our thinking is that we would at least be able to cook on the hob if we have more power cuts this winter.
His argument is that we could just get a camping stove if this happens again and that kitchen planning should be done for daily use and not for unusual events.
If you recently had a new kitchen, what hob have you gone for?
We currently have an electric Aga, it keeps heat for some time during a power cuts so cooking wise it’s only been an issue if the electric has been off for several hours.

Electric hob all the way.
We moved a few months ago and there was a gas hob in the house which we soon switched for electric.
Electric is far easier to control and cook with (I know someone will be along in a minute who thinks the exact opposite 😂)

Up till this year, I would have said always gas. But I got a new stove this year after my 40 year old one died, and I find the new gas hob much less responsive. I now think induction is worth considering. The power cut argument is still a strong one though. Camping stoves are not meant to be used indoors.

Unless you're having regular power cuts that last more than 24 hours, I'd go for induction. We had ours fitted a couple of years ago as part of a house renovation, and I think it's brilliant. I was always a fan of gas before, but induction is so much easier to keep clean and is quicker to respond. I'd avoid getting an electric hob, other than induction, because, having spent a year using one whilst the renovation happened, they are so slow to heat up and cool down.

We do get quite a few power cuts here (the west of Ireland), but mostly in the winter when we have the wood-burning stove lit in the front room, and it's perfectly possible to boil a saucepan of water on that if we're desperate for a hot drink. We survive on sandwiches and salad :)

Gas everytime. We get regular power cuts in the winter though.

Iloveeverycat · 03/06/2026 11:59

I would only ever have gas.

Buscobel · 03/06/2026 12:00

Induction

managingexpectations · 03/06/2026 12:01

Induction all the way. I’d only ever had gas until I moved into my current house. It not only looks better and is far easier to clean it much easier to cook on as it’s much quicker to change temperature it’s also pretty energy efficient.
my work colleague just had her kitchen revamped and opted for induction and she loves it as well.
I can understand your reluctance if power cuts are a regular issue though. The kitchen co were right that it should be planned for everyday use and not a what if situation.

LostThestral · 03/06/2026 12:02

I have an induction hob & absolutely love it, easy to clean & it is so fast to heat up & very fast response when adjusting temperature.

That said, be careful if anyone has a pacemaker as it can interfere if your too close

Thehorticulturalhussie · 03/06/2026 12:07

Induction.

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2026 12:10

I wouldn't give up my gas hob for anything, especially as we get regular power cuts in winter where we live.

There was an induction hob in the holiday cottage we rented recently and I hated it. Super easy to clean I grant you, but otherwise I wasn't a fan.

Somersetbaker · 03/06/2026 12:29

If you stir fry using a wok you need a gas hob, with a big burner and a wok stand. Far less to go wrong with a gas hob, no electronics other than the igniter, just pipes taps and burners.

Whataflippincircus · 03/06/2026 12:30

Induction, I would never go back.

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 03/06/2026 12:45

Have just changed from a gas hob to induction, as part of a long term move to a lower emission household.

I cook and bake a lot, and the induction hob is really quick and much more controllable than I had thought. Anything from just keeping warm to boiling a big pan of water for pasta in seconds. Very impressed!

We already had suitable pans so that wasn't an issue, and our area hardly ever gets power cuts, so not a consideration either.

AnnaQuayRules · 03/06/2026 12:50

Induction.

We had one fitted in our last house, it was amazing. So controllable and so easy to clean. Then we moved to our current house with a gas hob and I hate it. Also I've really noticed how hot the kitchen gets when the hob is on because half the heat from the hob goes into the room.

In our last house we used to have the occasional power cut. We managed with a camping stove for cups of tea etc. As you were advised, you need to design your kitchen for everyday use, not rare events.

deplorabelle · 03/06/2026 13:31

Induction. I much prefer it to my gas cooker for cooking and it has revolutionized my asthma not breathing in NOX particulates from open gas flames every day.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 03/06/2026 13:44

They use induction on Masterchef and they seem to cope fine. Seriously, induction is much easier to clean and is more controllable than gas.

Namechangedasouting987 · 03/06/2026 13:48

Induction. Love my new one..it can boil a pan of water in less than a minute.
Don't get a non induction electric though.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 03/06/2026 13:50

What heating do you have? Are you looking at getting a heat pump in the next few years? If the only appliance using gas is the cooker, then I would go fully electric and have your gas supply capped.

VenusClapTrap · 03/06/2026 13:52

We switched from gas to induction recently, slightly reluctantly. It’s been fine. I wouldn’t go back to gas now.

Dontbeatwat · 03/06/2026 14:00

Induction. Would never ever go back to gas, it's far easier to control and SO much easier to clean!

PartyQuestion30th · 03/06/2026 14:20

Induction, we switched from gas. It's so much better. It's a bit beepy that's my only issue with it.

JustJoshing · 03/06/2026 14:23

Gas

YorkieTheRabbit · 03/06/2026 14:25

@Mycarsmellsoflavender We have a gas boiler, the pipe work is micro bore and it didn’t seem that straight forward to have a heat pump fitted when we had a new boiler around four years ago.

If I’d been asked last year what type of hob, I’d have said electric, probably induction. However, due to the power cuts we had between the end of November and early January, I’m now not so sure.
They lasted anywhere between twenty minutes to several hours.

I must say having had experience of both gas and electric I have always preferred gas.

When I had my kitchen revamped a couple of years ago the designer tried to persuade me to have an induction hob and I seriously considered it. It was the fact I would need to replace my saucepans with ones suitable for induction heat that swayed me into deciding against it.

That being said the gas hob I ended up with isn't the best quality and it is rather difficult to get nuanced heat. So my regret isn't so much opting for gas again but the fact I didn't get a better quality hob. Or actually a better quality kitchen installation company because they proved to be a bit of a nightmare all in.

ThePlover · 03/06/2026 15:26

I've had to have electric hobs for 40 years because there's no gas in my village.
I still yearn for a gas hob.
