Eagle brand medicated oil. Magical.

Antihistamines and hydrocortisone cream on the sting

Heat. I dip a teaspoon into coffee and press it against the bite for as long as I can bear.

A hot compress initially to break down the enzyme in the bite that causes the itchiness. Then as mentioned hydrocortisone cream and antihistamines

JacknDiane · 02/06/2026 23:05

Actually i have antihistamines, didn't think of hydrocortisone cream, what does that do?

Is this just for straight away after the bite has appeared, or every time it starts itching?

Pyjamatimenow · 02/06/2026 23:08

helps the body to reduce its immune response to the sting, so it will reduce inflammation and the itch.

Ladyeggo · 02/06/2026 23:22

I don’t go anywhere without it, it was the best thing I ever bought on a Mumsnet recommendation.

I swear by high strength vitamin B12 2 weeks before and then during your holiday. I used to get chewed but haven’t had a bite in years!

Antihistamines and hydrocortisone cream on the sting

100% agree with this

suki1964 · 02/06/2026 23:41

Im allergic to mozzies , I suffer

I never travel without antihistamine cream and tablets and find what is sold locally - not the herbal stuff like lemon, but the most potent I can buy OTC from a chemist

ScullyD · 02/06/2026 23:54

Only one thing works for me. Hold a hairdryer near the bite as long as you can stand, usually about 10 secs. You will get instant relief that will last most of the day.

Musicaltheatremum · 03/06/2026 06:45

After bite. It's and ammonium based product. Neutralises the sting best done soon after the buggars bite. It's not a wonder cure but I'm in Greece just now and it has helped. You can even buy it abroad.

I never go away without Anthisan, in case of bites. Always available at Boots.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/06/2026 07:03

I always use OFF (deet) to keep mozzies/black flies away. To remedy a bite, take an antihistamine, use After Bite then calamine lotion. I sometimes use a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol as a compress, too (just be careful as it can burn your skin if applied for too long).

macshoto · 03/06/2026 08:53

Fenistil (Dimetindeno maleato) 1mg/g gel bought from a pharmacy in Europe. Seems to do more than Anthisan. We stock up whenever we are in the EU.

We also take one a day antihistamine tablets when necessary.
