Ceiling fans…

…do they work?
my house gets too hot in summer, it’s been overcast, raining but warm here today think the highest to was 20 but my bedroom is 25 degrees despite the window open all day. On actual sunny days it’s unbearable even following all the usual advice.
i’m considering installing a ceiling fan but would it make that much of a difference or just waft around hot air?
air con would be the dream but I’m too skint for that!

Ceiling fans are great. They definitely make a decent breeze and keep the air moving. Get a fan with 5 speeds, not 3. The lowest speed on a 3 speed fan is too slow and is basically useless. A 5 speed fan gives a better range of speeds.

Agree that ceiling fans make a big difference at night - in the hot weather we put ours up the second from top speed and it’s like a breeze and if it’s only a little warm the lower speed just makes it feel like a window is open and a sl breeze is blowing in - top speed feels a bit like a place about to take off though!

Excellent. That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. It’s unbearable trying to sleep when it’s too warm there’s no air moving tonight at all and I feel suffocated.
im away to hunt out a good one

If it’s warmer outside than in, you should keep the windows and curtains closed. It’s easier to prevent the room heating up than to cool it properly. It’ll give a fan a better chance of cooling and not just moving warm air around.

I've got one over my bed and it really helps me sleep. Go for a good quality one for reliability, stability and quietness. Mine is by Fantasia.

I live in Spain and have ceiling fans all through my house. I don’t use the air con - I just use them in summer and they’re great! They create a lovely breeze plus mozzies hate them. In winter you can reverse the blade rotation which pushes warm air down which helps keep rooms warm.

Pootles34 · 02/06/2026 09:04

We're looking to get one - if anyone can recommend a decent one that looks ok if be very grateful

ShyGirl32 · 02/06/2026 09:07

We got a cheap £25 ceiling fan light thingy off Amazon, so far so good! Surprisingly effective if it’s right over you

GalaDinner · 02/06/2026 09:47

We have them in our house in Spain, as well as air con. I would highly recommend them.

Curlygirl06 · 02/06/2026 09:49

Same here, gives a lovely bit of breeze.

@SuperSangei do all that it’s just a ridiculously
warm house in the summer. It’s awful coming home from late shifts at work and trying to cool the house down enough to get a sleep. The last 2 days haven’t been all that hot at all, outside temp of 20 and overcast/rain but my room has been 25/26 even with windows open all day. The coldest it’s been is 23 and it’s just stuffy and horrible to try to sleep in.
I’ve found a fan on Amazon so I’ll hopefully notice a difference when it’s delivered and fitted 🤞🏼

Yes, ceiling fans work well. Couldn’t live without it. Australia here.

ElegantlyDecluttering · 02/06/2026 11:42

Are they easy to fit, do you just replace the light fitting (ours are pendants)?

tiramisugelato · 02/06/2026 11:44

We have a cheap one from Amazon and it’s amazing in the summer! Really makes a difference to how well we sleep.

StarCourt · 02/06/2026 12:34

I have one in my bedroom that just plugs into the bulb socket. It’s brilliant

In my country you need an electrician to install them and their wall mounted controller. If you’re removing a light you’ll want to get a ceiling fan/light combination.

littegi08 · 02/06/2026 20:49

Sorry, am going to be honest. They dont work. We had all the fans. Aircon is the only solution - wall mounted. Maybe wait for the government £2500 grant for aircon ....

Eixample · 02/06/2026 20:55

Also live in Spain and have them in every room. I have seen the thermostat drop 3 degrees when I get home and turn them on. That’s enough for me — I have all the setup for airconditioning but haven’t felt the need to buy the machine to make use of it. I stayed in Florida one August and there were only ceiling fans and it was fine.
Have you slept with a fan on you all night before? That might be one thing to check if you like before going to the expense. It is better than a standing fan, but you‘ll want to know you can sleep with it on.
In the meantime, you want your bedroom window shut all day, not open, with the curtains closed too. Just open them at 7pm

Well they work as a fan! Blowing air around and providing a breeze, but no one is saying they're equivalent to air conditioning.
