Anyone changed broadband provider and found a cheaper reliable deal?

I would love to know any experience of Mumsnet readers about changing Broadband provider. We have always been with BT as they were reliable but our current monthly bill is £87 plus any calls from the landline. As an retiree now I wouldn't mind a lower bill if possible. I do stream some films and programmes on the TV, I use the PC.for my voluntary work and I use the wifi for my mobile. Could I pay less and still have good Broadband? I'm not worried about keeping thr landline at all.

That's insane !! I pay so much less.
Just go to .only supermarket or uswitch and find a better deal

Happy with community fibre at £21 / month broadband only, no landline. There is Wi-Fi but no streaming box, we just watch via apps on the tv. Not sure how widely available they are.

We are with plusnet, who have been very reliable over the years, WiFi only, no landline. DC uses the broadband for PlayStation, we both have mobiles, I use an iPad and we stream some tv -via a digital tv and on one, via via a fire stick on another tv.

Sorry, my plusnet is £25.99 per month, although next March it is going up to £29.99

It depends what service you have available locally, phone line or fibre. We have fibre in our street, so get fast broadband from Zen for about £30 per month. They don't offer a lot of support so you need to be fairly tech savvy.
No landline, haven't had one for years so just use mobiles and WiFi calling. Smart tv and apps + Roku stick for streaming so no box required.

To add, we looked at Plusnet but our fibre provider is not partnered with them, so we could not get Plusnet. Not all broadband providers are available in all areas, which we hadn't realised at first.

Go onto money saving expert to see the best deals. Go for one of the alt nets such as people have suggested above. Don’t worry about them not being a national brand as they will use the infrastructure from BT or VM but you will get the service cheaper.

Thank you so much, everyone. Yes, I must be insane to be paying nearly three times too much, by the sound of it. You're all very helpful and I will be on the case tomorrow first thing!

Oh no thats far too much

I'm paying £31 for 250mb broadband from Virgin - i think you can get a landline included as a new customer for that price

It does increase each april but i'm tied in for 18 months x

We were always with BT and our bill was £66 per month with Broadband and Anytime Any Length (no 60 min increase), Fibre to nearest box with unused cables in house. We have gone with Vodafone and it's £36 for similar deal which includes full fibre to house. The real unexpected bonus was a £75 voucher welcome which could be used in various stores. I have just done a shop in Sainsburys and my first bill is £72? What's was not to like!

Wdutua · 31/05/2026 19:36

Forgot to add our £72 bill with Vodafone was for 2 months.

AquaViper · 31/05/2026 19:48

Another vote for plusnet here. £24.99 a month for full fibre

I changed from Virgin Media (£65 per month) to Plusnet (£26 per month) and had to have a BT connection installed, which Plusnet paid for.

chimichangaz · 31/05/2026 20:06

I changed a while ago from virgin media to BT as VM line kept dropping and I needed a secure connection for work. Got a good deal for broadband and TV, then when contract renewal time came round I found a cheaper deal elsewhere and asked BT to match it which they eventually did.
If you need reliable broadband please check reviews etc for other providers as the quality isn’t always the same - but find the best deal for you and you could ask BT if they’ll match it. If not, move. Loyalty means nothing!!
