Why do people want to rip every plant out of their gardens?!

Just that.

My NDN have spent the past 2 days pulling up every mature tree, shrub and plant from the fence lines at the back and sides of their garden. Now instead of a view of lovely trees I can see all the houses behind and get a view of 3 families who now have no privacy. I can now see NDN wandering around in wheras before I could see nothing at all!

The plants weren’t shading their massive garden either and were covered in beautiful flowers. Just why?

Before anyone says…I have my own plants but due to the angle it won’t offer any privacy for those behind NDN.

Because they are scared of them, don’t like anything that could be “work”. Ignorant.

Namechangingagain12345 · 31/05/2026 18:31

The same as my neighbour, if it grows cut it. He now has a fence and astroturf and nothing else. He must hate living next to me and and relaxed planting (and some weeds!)

DilemmaDelilah · 31/05/2026 18:37

When we were in the process of buying my house quite a lot of years ago I showed a work colleague what it looked like on Google Street View. For context, one of the reasons we love it is because there is a stream bordered by trees on both sides in front of it, which makes it very private. Her response? Well you'll have to get rid of all those trees! 😳😳😳😳

There's nowt as queer as folk....

Madness isn’t it! She’s been out with a power saw all day just chopping at ripping everything out. The lovely old couple behind her must be gutted they are now exposed to half of the street!

There’s also so many little birds and other wildlife that used to live in those trees and bushes. Not any more.

Heartbreaking. No wonder the natural world is in crisis

Sally2791 · 31/05/2026 18:43

Ignorance and control.

They might be going to put a fence/screen up?

FolioQuarto · 31/05/2026 18:48

Horrific. I know someone with a concreted front garden and astroturf at the back. Apparently all insects are bad and they don't want them, or the "hard work" a few plants and trees make.

I would make it compulsory for everyone to grow a minimum number of pollinator attracting plants.

Luckydog7 · 31/05/2026 18:49

Because it's low maintenance, because they don't like bugs, because they like the 'clean' look and think it makes their garden look modern. Lots of reasons.

If it makes you feel better, I work in landscape design and I try to compensate for these types by stuffing as much planting as I possibly can into all my gardens. Imo they aren't a garden if there are no plants.

Can you compensate on your side of the fence? More trees, trellis?

Keroppi · 31/05/2026 18:54

Sad, isn't it illegal to cut hedges and trees in nesting season? Or just disapproved against.

Perhaps you could ask for some of them if she's managed to pull them up by the root.

MagpieMoon · 31/05/2026 18:55

Have watched every garden around us denuded of absolutely everything. Our garden looks like an oasis, surrounded as we are by astro turf and gravel. Ours is teeming with wildlife and birds, the others not so much. Makes me sad to look out at the gardens that were once well tended and full of plants and are now, frankly, boring.

I bet they vote reform

Bulldog01 · 31/05/2026 18:59

Our Buyer, only lived in the house for a year.
She purchased from us in 2022,put it on the market in 2023.
She painted the front door, i would not usually be bothered, but it was a recently installed and cost us £1800.00+

I thought it was a great improvement, composite type,
compared to the cheap door that came with the house, when we purchased.
We had seen the photos on rightmove.

She took all the plants up,moved the shed.
It looked unloved & empty.
A lesson learned, i will never spend money on a house,we are likely to move from.

Agents, mention improve your property, when you sell, when i move now, i will leave nothing!

I blame Mrs Hinch and her obsession with all things sterile

Screamingabdabz · 31/05/2026 19:05

You have my sympathy, we are surrounded by the soulless bare fences and gravel brigade too. I think it’s definitely something to do with the grey, WAG, ‘clean’ aesthetic. Just looks characterless and moronic to me.

It makes me upset, I’m hoping the people buying my home keep the plants and trees

we are being told to look after the environment

Wdutua · 31/05/2026 19:06

A few houses down from us have cut down the trees and undergrowth on the side of a footpath belonging to the County Council in nesting season. It was not theirs to cut! It will make us and all neighbouring residents' gardens noisier as a main road runs along the back.

Please everyone be aware: If you trim/cut down trees around you near a road the noise gets louder and adds to polution. Trees are a good barrier in a lot of cases (not all).

Maybe!
They have removed a lovely natural screen. Loads of different native plants and bushes, climbers that were a good 7ft tall. A beautiful cherry tree that flowered every year.

I can’t see how that’s nicer than a fence or bamboo screen 🙁

It’s really sad . I can only refer to a recent showing of a celeb being interviewed in relation to the Chelsea flower show . Her garden was minimalistic mainly slabs g pool and a few planters. She spoke about her mother’s cottage garden making her feel chaotic or similar and wanted a more ordered out door space,That they had ripped out all the plants and shrubs when they first moved in. Personally I like my outdoor space wild and natural. Lots of trees and cottage garden feel.

elephantoverthehill · 31/05/2026 19:09

I'm surrounded by barren gardens, may be a few hanging baskets and pots. I am convinced this is why all the slugs and snails seem to congregate in my garden. (And it's only tiny)

suburburban · 31/05/2026 19:12

The Joanie Mitchell song - Big Yellow taxi sums it up

Hotafternoon · 31/05/2026 19:13

The trees that gave me no view of the houses behind most of the year for the past 11 years have all gone. I'm now overlooked, it's horrible.

I've also lost my privacy due to building work next door, I'm now exposed down one side where I was protected by climbers before.

The birds are now all in my garden as I have the only tree at my end and they still have somewhere to shelter and roost.

😪

Well nor can I but I’m just saying I wouldn’t stress too much yet about the lack of privacy.

Good. Make them dig up almost all of their block paving and gravel as well. I'll help you write the words of the law.
