What do others do

Listening to my 22 year old and 17 year old daughters this morning deciding what to do for the day!
Shopping was a NO
Beach was a NO
Bowling was a NO
Cinema was a NO

Heard my 22 year old DD say to her 17 year old sister , What do other people our age do?

Got me thinking, what are others up to at evenings and weekends? We live in a pretty big village, the secondary school run is the only time you see teenagers out. Apart from a few I see on the park when walking our dog what are the others up to!

Got me thinking What do others do at weekends and in evenings? I feel like we're boring or just don't know how to entertain ourselves. I do walking netball once a week Wi twice a month , I crochet, garden and read.

What do others do?
What do your young adults do?

Just wandering.

I am mid 40’s and I go to the gym four times a week plus once. I tend to have coffee after the gym once a week and meet a friend for coffee most weeks too.
I read, enjoy walks, like trips to the theatre or a concert every few months.
Roughly once a month I go for lunch or dinner with a friend, usually a bit of shopping too.
I go to the beauticians once a month for nails, pedicure and waxing and the hairdresser every five weeks for a cut and colour, I enjoy the peace of both.

They need to have somewhere to go. A third space between home and education where they are free to do things within reason.

Is there a building in your village that's unused, could it be made into a youth centre or something? Your daughters sound like they want something more than driving to bowling or cinema or wandering round shops.

I think young folks need to to physically socialise rather than just being stuck on their phones. But that's so ingrained now with everyone.

Sport clubs/ gym / active hobbies (eg bike ride, horse riding, climbing etc). Meet up with friends - either go over to their houses or go for a drink in a coffee shop and chat. At 17 many have Saturday /Sunday jobs to go to.

I have a teen currently doing the homework they’ve had all half term to do.

Yeah mine have never had weekend jobs , apart from Sunday morning paper rounds. They both work full time Monday-Friday. Youngest is and Apprentice age works 37 hour a week so I get 5hat she's knackered

I guess that’s the problem- they’ve gone straight into the grown up stage!

meet up with friends from school who’ve gone down different routes? Join a club/sport?

MajorSamanthaCarter · 31/05/2026 16:55

Do they have friends outside of each other? Surely a 17 and 22 year old know how to entertain themselves!

Stoicandhappy · 31/05/2026 17:18

Cafe?

They have, oldest left college at 18, didn't want to do uni, other option was job. 27 year old didn't like college, stuck it out until she found an Apprenticeship.

They do but what they are finding is everyone is busy doing their thing. I also think the era of social media doesn't help!

My girls went to hockey training (adults team and then also one used to do a second evening coaching the kids), to the gym with friends, meet up for cinema trips, hang out in friends houses or have them over here. Occasionally meet up and go bowling in nearby city or crazy golf, football golf etc. they did have access to cars though and so did many friends.

I think people meet up with friends, do hobbies and sports, go to the gym, go out drinking or dancing, have a lie in, watch films or series at home, rest especially if they have busy work lives during the week. At those ages, I personally spent a lot of time with boyfriends or just relaxing at home when I wasn’t out with friends or bf.
