My mother had “standard roses” that were like small trees, a straight stem and all the foliage and flowers at the top.

IsthataNo · 30/05/2026 21:07

No not a tree it has long stems and these roses on it are huge ! It's tremendous

Can you take a photo and put it into ChatGPT? I did that once to ask if my plant was dead🤦🏽‍♀️

Chipsahoy · 30/05/2026 21:10

Sure it’s a rose? Rhododendron?

Candleabra · 30/05/2026 21:10

It’ll be a big shrub rose then. Some of the older varieties (tea roses) have big long stems when they get established, I have one in front of my kitchen window! What colour do you want?

IsthataNo · 30/05/2026 21:16

@Candleabra thank you ! I googled large shrub tea rose and no pics match however it did throw up a description of hybrid tea rose and that description matches sturdy upright growth with flowers on end of ling stem

Maybe a rambler?

IsthataNo · 30/05/2026 21:19

The one I have is large orange and yellow flowers and it doesn't have many but my goodness they are huge each one and at each stage it's stunning and smells amazing.

I just want to browse colours for another !

Sounds like a Peace rose, they are strong, vigorous with the large fragrant pinky yellow colour you describe. They are absolutely lovely!

LilyCanna · 30/05/2026 21:21

Other things it’s good to think about are whether a rose is repeat flowering or whether you get one big flush of flowers in early summer. Also some varieties they specifically tell you that they are not prone to disease. And whether they have a good rose scent!
If you’re open to Rosa rugosa, this one grows to about 6 foot tall. They have slightly more wrinkly leaves than classic roses and lots of thorns (car park roses!) but are easy to grow.

Roseraie De L'Hay

(Rugosa) A splendid shrub producing large, loose, crimson-purple blooms opening almost flat and smelling strongly of almonds. Good autumn colour. Shade tolerant.

Sorry, cross posted, that’s not what you’re looking for!

thesecretteacher · 30/05/2026 21:26

Rambling rose. There are many different ones.

AlwaysGardening · 30/05/2026 21:33

Sounds like a hybrid tea rose. Single large flowers on individual stems. I have Royal William and it easily makes 6’ each year.

David Austin’s ‘simply the best’ fits your description
