Private 6th form Dd - won’t work

Dd is at private sixth form and doing very little work. She needs to revise for retakes and is refusing to do anything. She did barely any revision for GCSE’s and managed vaguely decent grades (6s & 7s) but has been told that if she doesn’t up the work she’ll get no better than Ds max at A level. She promised that she would work hard if she went to private 6th form (they offered the subjects she was adamant she wanted to do) but quite simply isn’t. DH has been made redundant so we’re now harder up than we were (though can still just about manage the fees - on a wing & a prayer -) but the waste of £ just makes me feel sick. If she tried and got bad results that would be fine, but she doesn’t seem to give a 💩. I think we should give notice to the school (she’d now have leave at Xmas) and she can take her chances at A levels. But that’s my angry gut reaction talking. I’ve tried everything to motivate her (huge amounts of positive stuff - I’m not a total witch) but nothing’s working. Any advice? (Other than you chose private so suck it up, which will not help my current state of mind.)

Does she know how difficult things are for you financially? In your shoes I would let her read this thread and ask her what she thinks you should do. Good luck. It sounds very tricky.

Lozza70 · 28/05/2026 16:44

Have you told her finances are tight and you cannot see a good investment/outcome from the private sixth form? Personally I would give notice and tell your DD to get a job or an apprenticeship if she is not up for studying. If she wants to go to uni in the future she can do A levels at night school or go for Open University.

Pull her out and she can switch to a local college or go get a job.
She clearly isn't interested in A-Levels.

I’m sorry your dh has been made redundant.

many private schools )and state schools to be honest) do exams at the end of year 12 and have minimum results in order to stay on.

has she sat those exams already? What is she likely to get?

often if someone does not get good enough grades to move on to the second year of a levels the school suggests either starting again with different a levels (sometimes starting again at a new school or sixth form) or moving to BTECs or similar at an FE college.

maybe talk to the school?

Unfortunately it sounds like when you had money she got used to being indulged and developed herself quite the sense of entitlement. Now money is tight you are expecting her to suddenly be appreciative whereas from her point of view she just goes to school and is a teen.

Tell her based on how she's behaving, you're pulling her out as of July. She can start at a local college Sept or she works. You're only financing her if she works or studies.
Even if you have to pay for get place til Xmas, I'd pull her now/July.

Jamesblonde2 · 28/05/2026 16:59

Yes I’d tell her you’re giving notice, then start her at state in Sep. Although as you say you’ll have to keep paying until end of notice period.

What an absolutely ungrateful child.

My DC at independent 6th form and works very hard.

I would not stand for that.

My dd in 6th form hardly does any work either. Also at independent school. Just been diagnosed with ADHD. Are there any behaviour problems, or inattention?
