Should I buy another dehumidifier while mine is away for repair?

I have a desiccant dehumidifer that I bought last winter. It's not working properly since a power cut last week unfortunately.

I have it arranged with the shop to send it back for their technicians to have a look and repair it or send me a new one.

I will likely be without a dehumidifer from the 2nd of June until the middle of June.

I can't live without this for so many reasons. For humidity conditions in my room. Also for when it rains for helping with laundry.

I am half thing about buying another desiccant dehumidifer but I don't know. They can be expensive.

I know there are compressor types. I do have a smaller compressor one that I bought from Amazon before and in comparison to my current machine - it's useless. It's so small and the fan in it is so weak and it's just useless.

I live in an older home. The heat is not too bad now but it can get cold in winter.

I don't know if I should get another dehumidifier. My current one if I get it back repaired, it will likely still be used in another room especially for the winter time. I have a sibling due to embark on renovating an older home. I could give him my current dehumidifier once repaired.

I don't know how to manage this. Will I get another dehumidifier to manage while mine is away? Or will I get a bigger compressor type that would be cheaper than the model I am looking at. Or will I live without.

I wouldn't bother with a compressor type, personally. Perhaps give it a week or two for an update on the repair, but keep an eye on prices in the meantime.

Why is a compressor one not good ?

Can you not reduce the humidity indoors by opening the windows instead while it’s being repaired?

Why is your bedroom so damp?
Is it currently wet where you are? I'm in Yorkshire and apart from a thunderstorm this morning we have had a week of dry sunny weather.

We use a desiccant dehumidifier all winter long but we don't need it in the summer, just open the window all day.

It rains a lot where I am. Not always but it does rain a lot. I learned last winter that it's not great to open the windows when it's raining outside because the outdoor humidity will be exchanged with the indoor humidity. I have a humidity sensor and that's exactly what it shows. If I have the dehumidifer stopped and if I open the window just even for about 10 minutes, if it's raining, the humidity sensors reader climbs higher quickly. Apparantly it's best to only open windows when it's dry outside. When it's cold and winter, only open the windows during short bursts of weather.

Compressors are good but it depends on your home. If you have a newer build with insulation the home is often warmer. Compressor dehumdifers work better in warmer homes and not colder homes.

My home is older and sometimes it's gets very cold, especially in winter.

I don't know what the weather will be like when my dehumdifer will be gone.

Last winter was the first winter I had a desiccant so I wasn't sure what would happen for the summer time.

I was using it right up until this week and even now that's it's not working well, I am still using it but only for about an hour every morning. I must admit that hour is dreadful and it's getting so hot in my room.

I wonder if you could hire one whilst yours is away?

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 30/05/2026 11:21

Isle of Man by any chance? I know someone who lived there and said everything in the house always felt damp.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 30/05/2026 11:30

I agree with hiring one if you really can’t live without for a couple of weeks…

MrMay · 31/05/2026 17:45

Thank you. I explored hiring one but the costs involved don't make sense. It's nearly 80 euro a week to rent one. I don't know if weekends have an extra charge or rent. I would need one for about 2 weeks. Those costs are nearly the cost of a new machine.

I think I will buy a new one. I really really really can't live without it.
