Afternoon tea

Ive been invited to an afternoon tea for someone's birthday. The cost is £22.59. All the food gets brought to the table which is sandwiches. Cake, fruit and a drink. Im ot sure it's worth it because you take from the main plate so if you only eat w sandwiches and some cake a d sone fruit, that would not come to £22.50 I think it's a rip off. I would have to consume an awful lot of sandwiches and cakes to get my monies worth. Never been to an afternoon tea before and think it's too expensive

Well I did get invited and this Sunday I am going for Sunday lunch with a friend.

Well then you have a perfect excuse to decline, you'll be too full to enjoy it after your Sunday roast.

I agree with you that the food part of afternoon tea is poor value for money, but people are generally paying for the surroundings and the novelty of a selection of little cakes, scones and sandwiches and £22.50 is very much at the lower end of the price scale for afternoon tea, it's usually quite a bit more than that.

hahabahbag · 29/05/2026 18:41

It’s a bargain. A sandwich alone around here is £8-10 you then usually get 1-2 scones, and then several small cakes and desserts or more substantial slices. Sometimes you get quiche, sausage rolls or other savouries as well. Ive usually had to take cake home. Don’t go if you don’t fancy it but it’s cheaper than dinner out

reluctantbrit · 29/05/2026 18:45

As others said, that's actually quite cheap.

I did a couple of afternoon teas, it's an experience and it's like going out for dinner and paying more than it would cost you to cook the same meal at home. My last one had an Alice in Wonderland theme, whimsy crockery which all looked different, the cakes were amazing and the whole decor matched the theme. Definitely not what you just whip up in your kitchen.

We always didn't need a normal dinner afterwards, I think it was more a case of "I may nibble on an apple". In some places we were given any leftovers to take away as the amounts are always more than you can actually eat.

Don't go if you don't want to.

So, the “Perky” bit is ironic?

BurtsBeefCrisps · 29/05/2026 21:54

It’s probably the cheapest way to celebrate a birthday! That’s not much to pay in the big scheme of things, the price of a small round of drinks

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 29/05/2026 21:59

Lol just ask for more food you big faceache.

MsAmerica · 29/05/2026 22:54

At a "real" party, you wouldn't be paying anything.

But surely you are aware is it a fairly normal convention to say to people "Anyone fancy joining me for a meal, to celebrate my birthday?".

Quite different from hiring a room and a DJ. It is a normal way to celebrate birthdays with friends.

kennycat · 30/05/2026 00:14

That is generally how an afternoon tea works but usually people are pretty fair at these things. You can often ask for more sandwiches too in my experience because there are never enough sarnies and waaaay too many cakes (in my opinon). I'd say you should go, see what you think and then decidse on future afternoon teas on the basis of your experience at this one. That price is good for this day and age so it will be a good first try for you, Enjoy a day with your friends x

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/05/2026 00:27

I don’t really like afternoon tea as it falls at a weird time for me - too late to be lunch, so late you don’t want dinner then are hamming into cheese and biscuits at 10pm - but I think that’s very cheap. It’s not something I regularly choose to do, but I’d happily go if that’s what my friends wanted, or for an occasion. (My friend and I go to a festive afternoon tea at the start of December every year - and while my same reservations stand, I love the tradition of us doing it and it marks the countdown to Christmas for us.)

SqueakyFromme · 30/05/2026 00:30

IME OP always too many sweet sickly cakes and not enough sandwiches, and yes it’s expensive for what it is, like everyhing these days I’m afraid 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fontet · 30/05/2026 00:33

The cheapest afternoon tea I know of…🤗. It’s all about being there and celebrating is it not! Honestly….maybe it’s best to give it a miss. 🍰😀

No need to be so rude, and no doubt they'd charge an arm and a leg for any extra food

I've been to plenty and never had any charge for extra food. They are happy to bring more.

I wasn't rude either. Faceache is a lighthearted term.

In your opinion, yes. It is actually a derogatory term, especially for people you don't know

Lol. Go and have an afternoon tea and chill out. Faceaches everywhere.

In fairness, the OP is a very familiar figure on here, notable for threads where she would pick a fight with the wall for looking at her, and has ditched friends for saying she needn’t spend money on bringing them back a fridge magnet from holiday, for not continuing to reply indefinitely to her WhatsApps when they were a friend of a friend showing her around on holiday and she didn’t even like them, for not enquiring after her health within a precise amount of time after a day hospital appointment, so I think ‘faceache’ is not inappropriate.

ThreeStripeQueen · 30/05/2026 13:23

I’m not an afternoon tea fan.
I’ve never seen one with fruit as part of it though, it sounds more like a child’s packed lunch.

MauriceTheMussel · 30/05/2026 13:31

I lol’d so hard at “face ache”

I spent £200 on afternoon tea at The Dorchester last week. Worth every penny.

Personally I much prefer the little savoury sandwiches (never enough!) so anyone else can always have my share of the sticky little cakes, scones, jam and cream, if I can have their sandwiches. 🙂

At a good afternoon tea (eg Claridges) they will keep bringing sandwiches until you explode.... unless you ask them to stop, of course! And they're fantastic too.
